DURANGO, Colo. — Fort Lewis (6-6 overall, 4-2 in the
Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association) set a new school record for fewest goals allowed in its 20-1 win over Adams State (0-7, 0-4) today in women's lacrosse action at Ray Dennison Memorial Field.
Ally Kvidera (four goals, one assist) and
Jessica Norby (four goals, two assists) led the offensive attack for the Skyhawks, who built a 5-0 lead in the first four minutes of the game.
Abby Kvidera (three goals, two assists) and
Jessica Adams (three goals) each notched hat tricks for the Skyhawks, while Toki Tajima-Prodnuk (two goals, three assists), Kyle Smith (two goals, one assist) and
Amanda Cawker (two goals) also scored.
Adams State's Cydnee Allbee spoiled FLC's shutout bid when she weaved through traffic and fired a shot past Skyhawk netminder
Genna Waugh (6-5 overall) with just 58 seconds remaining in the game. The Grizzlies mustered just three shots, two of which were on goal. Waugh was forced to make but one save.
Her ASC counterpart, Desi Rae Aguirre (0-2 overall) made 16 saves and faced 36 shots on goal. She added a pair of ground balls and one caused turnover.
Fort Lewis' previous record of two goals allowed in a game was set twice earlier this season, in 23-2 neutral-site matchup against Millsaps on March 17, and again in a 24-2 win at Adams State on March 19.
“It was a well-played game on our end,” said first-year FLC head coach Kelsey MacDonald. “We came up with 50/50 balls, draw controls and played great defense when we lost the ball, winning it back in the midfield.”
Fort Lewis controlled 16 of 23 draws, won 15 ground balls and caused 11 ASC turnovers. The Grizzlies were limited to seven draw controls, nine ground balls and seven caused turnovers.
Abby Kvidera had six draw controls and five ground balls for FLC. Her six draw controls are the second most in a single game in school history.
Fort Lewis wraps up its 2011 season in Colorado Springs next week, where it will face Colorado Collage at 4:30 p.m. Friday and Center at 3 p.m. Saturday. The Skyhawks have already set a school record with six victories in 2011 and will try to finish the year with a .500 record or better for the first time in the school's three-year women's lacrosse history.
