DURANGO, Colo. — Kayla Bruner and Kassie Haubert were named as the 2011 Most Valuable Players of the Fort Lewis College softball team, first-year head coach Kira Zeiter announced following yesterday's season-ending doubleheader against Colorado State University-Pueblo.

Bruner, a 5-foot-6 senior catcher from Jordan High School in Sandy, Utah, led the Skyhawks in nearly every offensive category in 2011. She batted.423 — second best in FLC history — while leading the team in home runs (12), RBI (33), doubles (11), hits (52), runs (38) and stolen bases (10).

Bruner was named All-Desert Stinger honorable mention in February for batting .500 with seven hits, five RBI, one homer and one double at the five-game tournament in Las Vegas, Nevada, that featured top NCAA Division II teams from across the country.

“Kayla is an athlete who you can depend on day in and day out,” said Zeiter. “She always comes to the field with her A-game, and with all of her tools that is something that makes a very special softball player. She has been a leader for this team and a true role model to the younger athletes.”

Haubert, a 5-foot-10 sophomore pitcher from Berthoud High School in Berthoud, Colo., emerged as FLC's ace in 2011. She went 10-12 during the season with a 7.25 earned run average and 72 strikeouts. She also appeared in 33 of FLC's 41 games in 2011, starting 23 times.

Haubert was a third team All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference selection a year ago, and has been named to the RMAC All-Academic Honor Roll each of the past two seasons.

“Kassie has been a workhorse this year,” said Zeiter. “She has pitched her heart out every day and has really been solid in the circle. She has a sense of calm about her on the mound that helps to ease the entire team, and that is something that makes her a truly wonderful pitcher.”

Fort Lewis finished the 2011 season 13-28 overall, 12-24 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and fifth place in the RMAC West Division. The team loses just two seniors — Bruner and first baseman Joanna Young — to graduation.
