Morris powers Skyhawks to 76-62 win over Cougars

Senior records seven straight double-double

Box Score

DURANGO, Colo. — Double-doubles are lofty goals for most players. For Skyhawk senior Matt Morris, they're the mark of another day on the job.

Morris recorded his seventh straight double-double and eighth of the season with 13 points and 15 rebounds as Fort Lewis (8-6 overall, 6-4 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) defeated Colorado Christian 76-62 in a game that wasn't as close as the final 14-point margin indicated.

The Skyhawks' 6-foot-6 center dominated the glass and even got a chance to rest some tonight, playing just 29 minutes compared to the 39- or 40-minute efforts he's logged lately. In doing so, he improved his conference-leading rebounding average to 11.2 per game.

While Fort Lewis never trailed, the Cougars (2-12, 1-9) did frustrate the Skyhawks in the early minutes, tying the score at 15-15 7:26 into the game.

A beautiful spin move on a drive from the left wing by 6-foot-9 center Torrey Udall gave FLC a 17-15 lead and sparked an 18-8 run that pushed the margin into double digits by the waning minutes of the first frame. The Skyhawks had a commanding 17-point lead at intermission, 44-27.

Fort Lewis led for 20 or more throughout much of the second half before the Cougars took advantage of the Skyhawk bench in trimming the deficit to 10 points with 1:13 remaining — a 14-3 run over the course of three minutes that forced Fort Lewis head coach Bob Hofman to sub in his starting lineup during what's normally garbage time.

Senior guard Matt Billups scored 16 points and went 9-of-10 from the foul line to lead the Skyhawks. Mike Matthews chipped in 11 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and a pair of steals off the bench.

The Cougars were led by Kyle Weaver's 16-point effort. Daniel Pilkington came off the bench to add 11 points, seven caroms, and five helpers.

Fort Lewis easily won the rebounding battle by a 40-25 clip, limiting CCU to just five boards on the offensive glass.

Miscues plagued FLC throughout the contest, as the Skyhawks committed 23 turnovers.

Forty-nine fouls were whistled, including 27 by the Cougars. Fort Lewis made 27 of 41 free throw attempts, while CCU converted 13 of 18 charity shots.

The Skyhawks host an angry Colorado Mines (12-2, 8-2) squad at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow. The ninth-ranked Orediggers lost a share of the RMAC lead when they dropped a 70-59 contest at Adams State tonight.

Mines will also look to avenge a pair of playoff losses to Fort Lewis at the end of the 2010-11 season — a 72-67 defeat in the RMAC Shootout championship in Pueblo, Colo., and a 77-65 loss in the second round of the NCAA Division II Central Regionals in Mankato, Minn.
