No. 4 Skyhawks back on winning track after beating Regis 69-54

Beeman comes off bench to lead way with 16 points

Box Score

DENVER — One night removed from their first conference loss of the season, No. 4 Fort Lewis (15-2 overall, 12-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) got back on track by defeating Regis (6-13, 4-9) 69-55.

“A much better effort tonight,” said seventh-year FLC head coach Mark Kellogg. “We were much more relaxed and composed. I didn't know exactly how we were going to respond, because it was pretty emotional from the night before. I thought our focus was pretty good and we really defended pretty well.”

Stephanie Beeman came off the bench to lead the way with 16 points, scoring 13 in the first half as the Skyhawks built a 39-27 halftime lead. Beeman went 6-of-7 from the field and made all three of her three-point attempts.

The Skyhawks went on an 18-4 tear in the first 10 minutes of the second stanza to build a 57-31 lead. Kellogg rested his starters down the stretch, as the Rangers outscored FLC 24-12 in the final 10 minutes.

“We played pretty well for about 31 minutes. The last nine wasn't so good … we gave up probably too many points there,” said Kellogg.

Dana Schreibvogel recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds and was the only other Skyhawk to score in double figures.

“Dana was really good. It's as relaxed as she's been,” said Kellogg. “She really rebounded the ball well for us. It's good to get her back on track.”

Brandi Collins scored 12 points to lead the Rangers.

Fort Lewis shot 53.2 percent from the field (25 of 47) and 46.2 percent from behind the arch (six of 13), but committed 30 turnovers.

“We turned it over too much … obviously a huge Achilles heel and we've got to get that figured out,” said Kellogg.

The Skyhawks return to Whalen Gymnasium f or three straight games, beginning with Adams State (6-11, 5-8) at 5:30 p.m. next Saturday.

“It's a step in the right direction. We got the split, that's what we at least had to do. We're still in a good spot,” said Kellogg. “We'll get ready for Adams next weekend.”
