No. 22 Fort Lewis beats CSU-Pueblo 3-0 in women’s soccer

Celler, Tita, Weiss score for resilient Skyhawks

Box score

PUEBLO, Colo.No. 22 Fort Lewis (11-3-2 overall, 7-3-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) got back on the winning track in a 3-0 win at Colorado State-Pueblo (1-12-2, 1-10-1) this afternoon at the Rawlings Sports Complex.

Molly Celler, Laura Tita, and Sam Weiss all scored for the Skyhawks, who rebounded from a 6-3 loss at Regis on Friday.

“We were very resilient,” said sixth-year FLC head coach Damian Clarke. “I thought we played fantastic. It was one of the better games we've played all year long. Hopefully we can get on a roll.”

Celler opened scoring at 31:08 when she headed home Kate Sowell's corner kick to give FLC a 1-0 lead. Four of Cellar's five markers this season have come off her head — something that Clarke said hasn't happened for several years.

Tita — a freshman who has seen most of her action as an outside defender but who has garnered some time at forward lately — notched the first goal of her career at 51:34 when Celler played a through ball to her to set up a 1v1 opportunity.

Weiss finished the scoring with her 11th marker of 2012 when Elena Benavides sprung her with a through ball that she deposited into the bottom left corner of the goal.

The Skyhawks could have tacked on two more late goals, but Weiss and Allison Knewitz hit the crossbar down the stretch.

Amanda Raso (9-2-1) made nine saves in recording her fifth complete-game shutout of the year.

Savanah Thompson made five saves in 86 minutes of action to take the loss for Colorado State-Pueblo. Arianna Sisson made one save in four minutes of relief.

FLC outshot CSUP 17-12, but shots on target were level at 9-9.

Fort Lewis improved to 17-14-5 all-time against the ThunderWolves and have won the past three meetings in the series.

The victory moved the Skyhawks into a fourth place tie in the RMAC standings with Metro State. Both teams have 23 points and 7-3-2 records in league play (three points are awarded for a win, one for a tie). UC-Colorado Springs and Regis (28 points, 9-2-1) share the league lead with Colorado Mines (24, 8-3-0) in third.

The top six teams in the RMAC advance to the league playoffs, with first- and second-place finishers earning a first round bye. The third and fourth place teams will host opening round games on Wednesday, Oct. 31.

Fort Lewis concludes its regular season next weekend when it hosts Colorado Christian (2-12-1, 0-10-1) at 1 p.m. Friday and Regis (11-4-1, 9-2-1) at 1 p.m. Sunday at Dirks Field.

The Skyhawks are 21-12-2 all-time against Colorado Christian and have won 16 straight over the Cougars. The Rangers lead the all-time series with FLC 26-10-3, including a 6-3 win at the Regis Match Pitch on Friday.

Sunday's match marks the final regular season home appearance for seniors Benavides, Rachael Budagher, and Serena Mancha
