DURANGO, Colo. — Cody Renken caught four first-half touchdowns and Matt Brown threw for 415 yards and five scores as Colorado Mines (4-2 overall, 2-2 in the
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) defeated Fort Lewis (0-5, 0-4) 58-16 today at Ray Dennison Memorial Field, spoiling FLC's Homecoming in the process.
“Mines did a great job and had a solid game plan on both sides of the ball,” said third-year FLC head coach Cesar Rivas-Sandoval. “We came out with some energy and then went flat in the second quarter. Mines had an explosion and we just couldn't recover. The plays were out there to be had. We just couldn't make them. Good teams make plays when it matters.”
Fort Lewis built a 3-0 lead when
Eric Garcia-Henderson kicked an 18-yard field goal with 4:40 remaining in the first quarter, giving the Skyhawks their first lead of the 2012 season.
Then Renken and Brown took over, connecting for touchdown strikes of 18, 7, 17, and 19 yards in the second quarter as the Orediggers built a 27-3 halftime lead and never looked back.
Brown finished the game completing 40 of 59 passes for 415 yards and five touchdowns. Renken caught 11 passes for 124 yards and four scores, while Jerrod Doucet caught 14 balls for 115 yards. Diamond Gillis had seven catches for 85 yards and a scored a four-yard touchdown on Gillis' last TD pass of the game with 4:36 remaining in the third.
Zach Newman scored a pair of touchdowns on four- and three-yard dives in the fourth quarter, finishing with 48 yards on 13 carries. CSM's backup quarterback, Joe Schneider, finished the scoring with a one-yard sneak late in the fourth quarter.
When the dust had settled, the Orediggers gained 566 yards on 100 plays.
Fort Lewis had a workmanlike 357 yards, the bulk of that total coming in the second half (226). FLC was held to 131 yards in the first half.
Skyhawk quarterback
Tim Jenkins completed 25 of 57 passes for 296 yards with two touchdowns. He was harassed by the Mines line throughout, though, and was sacked five times, hurried six times, and threw a pair of interceptions. Despite the sacks, Jenkins finished as FLC's leading rusher with 33 yards on 13 carries, including a long of 19.
Amery Duncan (seven catches, 59 yards),
Jonathan Price (seven, 48), and
Doyle Bode (six, 72) were his primary targets.
Jenkins hit
Jonathan Price with a five-yard touchdown pass with 1:26 remaining in the third quarter to cut the margin to 37-9.
Ethan Klaseen caught a long pass across the middle midway through the fourth quarter, outran CSM defenders to the right sideline and raced to the endzone for a 75-yard catch and run.
“My frustration comes because I know the potential of our offense. We're just not performing to the level that we need to be. Defensively, it's very difficult when you're thin but we've got to still be able to make plays on defense, too. It all comes down to how I prepare them every week.”
Senior linebacker
Phil Odell led the FLC defenders with 11 tackles (10 solo), including three behind the line of scrimmage for 10 yards in losses, one sack, and two pass breakups. Junior defensive back
Lance Dettmer had 11 tackles (seven solo) and an interception.
Jamal Campbell added nine tackles (six solo), one of which was behind the line of scrimmage.
Mines' defense was led by Chad McGraw, Kole Kadavy, and Jarrad McKay, each of whom notched seven tackles. Kadavy had 2.5 quarterback sacks as well.
Fort Lewis hits the road next Saturday to face Colorado Mesa (2-4, 2-2) at 6 p.m. at Stocker Stadium in Grand Junction, Colo.
