COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Fort Lewis College's
Yannis Becker was named to the Daktronics All-South Central Region men's soccer second team, regional chairman Jared Verner announced on Monday.
Becker, a 6-foot, 165-lb. freshman midfielder from Gymnasium Obervieland in Sittensen, Germany, led the Skyhawks in scoring in 2012 with 21 points (seven goals, seven assists). He was previously named to the All-
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference second team and was named the RMAC Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 18.
“Yannis has been a real impact player for us and as his time goes on here at Fort Lewis, he's only going to get better,” said fourth-year FLC head coach
Oige Kennedy. “He's going to be a top-flight player in the country for many years.”
Becker ranked among RMAC leaders in assists (fifth, seven), total points (sixth, 21), goals (ninth, seven) and shots (ninth, 44). He ranks 50th in school history with 21 total points despite playing just one season thus far in Skyhawk colors.
Colorado Mines forward Tesho Akindele, the RMAC Offensive Player of the Year and Most Valuable Player of the RMAC tournament, was named the Daktronics NCAA Division II Men's Soccer South Central Region Player of the Year. Heartland Conference champion St. Edward's led the region with four student-athletes on the first team.
First team all-region selections will be on the ballot for Daktronics Division II All-America honors, which will be announced on Wednesday, Nov. 28 prior to the NCAA semifinal games in Evans, Ga.
Division II sports information directors at colleges and universities that field men's soccer teams chose eight all-region teams and will select the All-America squad.
Accustomed to being a national powerhouse — it won NCAA Division II national titles in 2005, 2009 and 2011 and finished second in the nation in 1999 and 2006 — Fort Lewis finished its 2012 season at 9-8-2 overall, 6-6-2 in RMAC games. While FLC managed to notch its 16th straight winning season, it also posted its worst record since the 1996 squad went 7-10-2.
The Skyhawks also qualified for the RMAC playoffs for the 17th year in a row — and are the only team to advance to the league tournament all 17 years that the RMAC has sponsored men's soccer. Yet the 2012 team achieved the dubious feat of becoming the first FLC side to lose in the league quarterfinals. Fort Lewis also posted its worst-ever record in league games at 6-6-2, tying the 1996 squad with a .500 RMAC slate.
Fort Lewis loses just four seniors to graduation:
Derek Freeman,
Andy Hoffman,
Daniel Wilson and
Kyle Woodson.
