LAS VEGAS, Nevada — Kassie Haubert pitched a complete game and added two hits as Fort Lewis (1-1 overall) defeated Upper Iowa 9-4 this afternoon in its season opener at the Desert Stinger, hosted by Montana State-Billings.

Freshman Myndee Thompson hit a two-run inside-the-park home run in the first inning, while Chelsea Rodriguez also smashed a solo homer in the victory. Rodriguez had three of FLC's nine hits.

Haubert surrendered eight hits and four runs while striking out three.

Fort Lewis dropped its second game of the day to Mary (N.D.), 9-7. All seven Skyhawks runs came off the long ball. Kamali'i Peneku hit a three-run shot in the second inning, while Thompson's grand slam in the seventh trimmed the margin to 9-7.

Alexis Villegas went 5.2 innings and allowed 12 hits and nine runs.

Hayley Bolyard was the lone Skyhawk with two hits in the second game.

“Today we saw that our team has a lot more power from top to bottom throughout the lineup, which we're looking forward to continuing,” said Zeiter. “We also have more speed to push the envelope a little bit on the bases … we did have two stolen bases today.”

Fort Lewis plays two games tomorrow at the Desert Stinger, facing Cameron (Okla.) at 3 p.m. (MST) on Majestic Park Field 9 and St. Cloud State (Minn.) at 8 p.m. (MST) at Majestic Park Field 4. The Skyhawks wrap up the tournament against Minot State (N.D.) at 3 p.m. (MST) Sunday at Majestic Park Field 9.
