Box Score
GOLDEN, Colo. — Colorado School of Mines (10-15 overall, 9-10 in the
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) avenged a 42-point blowout loss at Fort Lewis last month by stunning No. 10 Fort Lewis (19-4, 16-3) 78-71 tonight at Lockridge Arena.
The Orediggers went on an 11-0 run to start the second half to quickly blow open a game that was tied at 33 at intermission.
Fort Lewis struggled from the field throughout, making just 31 percent of its field goals (21 of 67) and 25 percent of its three-pointers (seven of 28).
The Orediggers, on the other hand, were just hot enough – especially from three-point range. Mines made 10 of 21 three-pointers (48 percent), many of which came with the shot clock running down.
Angie Charchalis did the bulk of the damage, scoring 28 points and grabbing nine rebounds while going 4-of-8 from behind the arc and 12-of-14 from the charity stripe. Stephanie Fogle added 13 points, while Courtney Gallo had 12.
Katerina Garcia led the Skyhawks with 20 points, making eight of 14 field goals including a couple of late treys.
Dana Schreibvogel added 12 points, while
Erika Richards scored 11 – 10 in the first half.
Fort Lewis outrebounded the Orediggers 40-38 and grabbed 21 offensive caroms. The Skyhawks also won the turnover battle by a 17-13 clip. CSM blocked eight shots, though, including three each by Katie Carty and Tory Langas.
The win came on the heels of FLC's 66-60 defeat at UC-Colorado Springs last Saturday. It marked the first time since March 2008 that the Skyhawks have lost back-to-back games (66-58 to Nebraska-Kearney in the first round of the NCAA playoffs on March 14, 2008, and 77-66 in overtime to Colorado State-Pueblo in the RMAC Shootout semifinals on March 7, 2008).
It also ended Kellogg's perfect 9-0 mark against the Orediggers. Mines hadn't beaten FLC since a 63-62 overtime win in Whalen Gymnasium on Dec. 18, 2004, during Greg Bruce's lone season as head coach at Fort Lewis.
The Skyhawks fell a game-and-a-half behind No. 7 Metro State (22-2, 18-2) in the race for the RMAC regular season title. The Roadrunners have just two games remaining and controls its own destiny, while FLC has three left on its league slate.
Fort Lewis hopes to end its losing streak at 5 p.m. tomorrow night at Colorado Christian (13-12, 11-8).
