LAKEWOOD, Colo. — After missing last night's game with a leg injury,
Matt Morris returned to the lineup to spark Fort Lewis (13-11 overall, 11-9 in the
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) to an 88-67 win over Colorado Christian (3-21, 2-18) tonight at the Cougar Event Center.
Although he started, Morris saw limited action but still led all scorers with 16 points on 8-of-12 shooting. The RMAC's rebounding leader also collected six caroms.
All 12 Skyhawks scored as Fort Lewis built a 43-24 halftime advantage.
Reserve center
Alex Herrera notched a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds in 25 minutes of action. The 6-foot-9 redshirt freshman went 5-of-7 from the field and added a pair of blocked shots.
“I've noticed for the last two weeks he's been coming on in practice,” said 16th-year FLC head coach
Bob Hofman. “He played pretty good at Mines last night, too. It was good minutes for him.”
Matt Billups added 12 points, three assists, and two steals for the Skyhawks.
Freshman guard
Kevin Flohr saw the most minutes of his collegiate career, scoring eight points on 2-for-2 shooting from three-point range and the free throw line in 12 minutes of action.
As a team, the Skyhawks were deadly from the floor all night long, shooting 56.5 percent from the field (35 of 62) and 50 percent from behind the arc (11 of 22).
Fort Lewis also won the rebounding battle by a comfortable, 38-26 advantage. Eleven of FLC's caroms were on the offensive end.
Luke Gilliam came off the bench to lead the Cougars with 15 points. Kyle Weaver added 12 while Daniel Pilkington scored 10.
The Skyhawks find themselves in seventh place in the RMAC standings and two full games in front of the ninth place team with one weekend remaining in league play. The top eight squads will qualify for the RMAC Shootout, which begins on Tuesday, Feb. 28.
Fort Lewis wraps up RMAC regular season play next weekend when it hosts Western State (12-12, 10-10) at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Colorado Mesa (14-10, 12-8) at 7:30 p.m. next Saturday.
"We're still playing for seeds," said Hofman. "That's the way it is. We'd rather be playing for championships"
The FLC football team will hold a clothing drive for the La Plata Family Centers Coalition each night. Fans are encouraged to donate clothing – children's clothing in sizes 5-15 in particular.

Josh Cassaday, and Morris.
