Grand Valley State rallies late to beat Fort Lewis 14-11

Lakers outscore Skyhawks 3-0 in final 10 minutes to complete second-half comeback

DENVER — Grand Valley State (5-4 overall) scored three goals in the final 10 minutes to complete a second-half comeback win and defeat Fort Lewis 14-11 today at the Regis Match Pitch.

Ali Dixon scored the game-winner with 8:43 remaining in the game and Brooke Ingraham and Rachel Leibovitz added insurance goals as the Lakers rallied from an 8-5 halftime deficit.

Brook Wineland led the Skyhawks with three goals, while Ally Kvidera and Kylie Smith scored two goals apiece.

Leibovitz tallied five times for Grand Valley State, while Victoria Devine had three goals and Dixon and Ingraham two each.

After Toki Tajima-Prodnuk put the Skyhawks ahead 1-0 in the first minute, Grand Valley State reeled off five straight goals to take a 5-1 lead 10 minutes into the contest.

The Skyhawks answered with seven straight markers in the final 20 minutes of the first frame to build their 8-5 halftime edge. An assortment of players got into the scoring during this stretch, including two by Kvidera and single markers by Wineland, Smith, Abby Kvidera, Kathryn Dunn, and Jessica Norby.

Grand Valley State scored the first four of the second half to reclaim the lead at 9-8 midway through the frame. No team had a lead larger than a single goal until Ingraham put GVSU ahead 13-11 with 7:17 remaining.

The Skyhawks outshot the Lakers 28-24 overall and 20-17 in shots on goal, but GVSU's Audrey Kobe was a force in goal, making nine saves. Genna Waugh stopped three shots for FLC.

Fort Lewis was dominant on draw controls (19-8) and won the ground ball battle (21-19). Turnovers were relatively even, with the Skyhawks committing 22 miscues and the Lakers 21.

Amanda Hoffmeyer set a new Fort Lewis record for draw controls with 10.

The Skyhawks (4-3 overall, 2-0 in league games) hope to rebound tomorrow in a Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association match against Regis (4-4, 3-1) at 1 p.m. at the Regis Match Pitch.
