DURANGO, Colo. — The Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse team is “Going Gold for Ghana” this weekend in an effort to raise money and supplies for the Willy-Taylor Academy in Asuadei, Ghana.
“The Fort Lewis lacrosse team wants to support the Willy-Taylor Academy,” said head coach Kelsey MacDonald. “The Academy was founded in the fall of 2010. The kids who attend the Willy- Taylor Academy are so grateful for their education. Many of the kids who currently attend Willy- Taylor had never the opportunity to attend school prior to its opening.”
The academy was named in part for FLC assistant coach Taylor MacDonald, who has done volunteer work and taught in Ghana.
The Irish Embassy Pub donated the t-shirts, which will sell for $15 each, with all proceeds going to Ghana.
“We will also be collecting shoes from your closets that could be worn by the students and their family members,” said Kelsey MacDonald. “We will also be collecting school supplies to help the school continue to grow and succeed. We are very excited to give back to the Willy-Taylor Academy and give the children in Ghana the opportunity to learn in a structured setting.”
Fort Lewis (5-5 overall, 2-2 in
Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association games) faces Colorado Mesa (3-6, 2-3) at 4 p.m. Friday. FLC hosts a neutral-site match between the Mavericks and Colorado College (9-2) at 3 p.m. next Saturday, followed by a home match against CC at 1 p.m. Sunday. All games will be played at Ray Dennison Memorial Field.
Admission is free, but fans are encouraged to support the “Going Gold for Ghana” cause by purchasing the shirts and donating used shoes.
