Regis rallies late to defeat Fort Lewis 18-17 in double overtime

Hastie’s 66th minute goal proves to be game winner

Box Score

DURANGO, Colo. — Melissa Hastie scored with 55 seconds remaining in the second overtime to lead Regis (7-7 overall, 5-2 in the Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association) to a come-from-behind, 18-17 win over Fort Lewis (6-7, 3-3) today at Ray Dennison Memorial Field.

“Today was another game where we played well but couldn't come up with the W,” said second-year FLC head coach Kelsey MacDonald. “Regis is a fast and athletic team who knows how to capitalize on their opponent's mistakes. They did that to us when we had a ten-minute lapse in the first half.”

The Rangers trailed 7-1 midway through the first half, 14-9 midway through the second, and 17-16 with 1:15 remaining in the second overtime, but still managed to find a way to keep their sheet a perfect 8-0 in games against Fort Lewis.

The Regis comebacks were spurred on by their dominance in ground balls. The Rangers controlled 28 draws — the most by an opponent in FLC history — and lost just 11. Midfielders Danica Cutshall (who took the draws) and Emily Behr brutalized the Skyhawks by controlling 10 and eight draws, respectively. The extra possessions allowed Regis to own a 38-36 edge in shots and 32-26 advantage in shots on goal.

Fort Lewis built its leads thanks largely to the larger-than-life presence of goalkeeper Genna Waugh, who made a career-high 14 saves, the second most in school history.

“G came up big for us today with some key stops in net,” said MacDonald. “She made some key stops down the stretch.”

The Rangers drew first blood on Jessika Carlstrom's lone goal just 1:39 into the contest. Play was stopped for nearly 10 minutes a few moments later when FLC defender Amber Olsen suffered what appeared to be a serious knee injury. Her teammates rallied around her, reeling off seven straight goals in less than 10 minutes for a 7-1 edge. Regis managed to pull within 8-6 by halftime.

The second stanza started quickly for Fort Lewis. Three straight goals and five of the first six stretched FLC's lead to 13-7 less than seven minutes into the frame. The lead was 14-9 with 15:30 remaining when Kelsey O'Connor scored to spark a furious Regis rally. Nine minutes later, the Rangers led 16-14 and had all of the momentum.

But the Skyhawks refused to quit. Jessica Norby scored with 2:46 remaining in regulation to cut the lead to a single goal. Ally Kvidera netted the equalizer with 1:14 remaining to tie the score at 16-16.

Brook Wineland caused a Cutshall turnover after Kvidera's marker to give the Skyhawks possession for the most of the final minute of regulation. However, the only shot that FLC could muster was one by Kylie Smith that went wide right. The Skyhawks controlled the rebound, but turned the ball over with 15 seconds remaining and Regis goalkeeper Gianna Lombardi held the ball as time elapsed in regulation.

Norby staked the Skyhawks to a 17-16 lead just 29 seconds in overtime when Wineland set up Norby's 28th goal of the season. FLC held the lead for the remainder of the first three-minute overtime and two-thirds of the second before Regis' late-game heroics.

Margaret Nahrup scored off a McDonald assist with 1:15 remaining to force a 17-17 deadlock. McDonald set up Hastie's game-winner just 20 seconds later.

Cutshall won the final draw, but FLC's Jenna Steele forced a turnover by McDonald and picked up the ground ball. After a successful clear, the Skyhawks worked for a shot in the Regis zone for the final 40 seconds, but could muster just a late effort by Kathryn Dunn that sailed wide with four seconds remaining in the game.

Erin Dybus was the lone Ranger to net a hat trick, as she came off the bench to score three goals on four shots. Morgan Taylor, Hilary Duda, McDonald, and Hastie each scored twice for Regis.

Norby led the Skyhawks with four goals and two assists, while Amanda Cawker came off the bench to net four markers and one helper. Ally and Abby Kvidera each scored three goals and one assist, while Wineland had two goals and one helper.

Regis maintained a slim, 34-33 lead in ground balls. FLC's Nicole Krook led all individuals with seven, while Paige Juneau had six.

Gianna Lombardi earned the victory between the pipes for Regis, making nine saves in her 66 minutes of action.

“Overall we played our hearts out,” said MacDonald. “We now just need to find a way to win in these close games against quality programs.”

The Skyhawks led for most of the game against Colorado College last Sunday before bowing to the Tigers 14-12. All totaled, Fort Lewis is 0-13 against their two oldest in-state rivals. The Skyhawks are 7-0 against newer local foes Colorado Mesa and Adams State.

Fort Lewis will finish its 2012 season with a pair of home games next weekend. The Skyhawks host WILA-leading Lindenwood (11-2, 5-0) at 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 28, and Adams State (1-7, 0-6) at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 29.

Next weekend marks the end of the collegiate career of FLC's lone senior, Jessica Adams. The midfield/defense from nearby Cortez, Colo., is the only player to appear in every game in the four-year history of Skyhawk women's lacrosse.
