DURANGO, Colo. — From the opening draw at Ray Dennison Field today, about the only drama in the Fort Lewis vs. Adams State women's lacrosse game was whether or not senior midfield/defense
Jessica Adams would score a goal.
Adams, the 5-foot-2 midfield/defense from nearby Montezuma-Cortez High School who has started every game in the history of Fort Lewis' women's lacrosse program, kept the home crowd waiting until the final 10 minutes when she beat ASC goalkeeper Danica Kristiansen.
“Jess is the backbone of the Fort Lewis lacrosse program,” said second-year FLC head coach Kelsey MacDonald. “She has been through so many ups and downs, and this year she had an amazing season. She was definitely the heart and soul of our team this year.
It is so hard to be the only senior on a team,” MacDonald added. “It was great to end the season with a W and especially for Jess. I am going to miss coaching her. She is just one of those players who you want on your team, a true competitor.”
Ten Skyhawks scored goals as FLC jumped out to a 11-0 lead in the first 15 minutes.
Kylie Smith led the way with six markers, followed by
Ally Kvidera (four goals, two assists),
Brook Wineland (three goals, one assist),
Jessica Norby (two goals, four assists), and
Abby Kvidera (two goals, one assist).
Even
Paige Juneau and
Jenna Steele — players who rarely leave the defensive side of the field — scored their first goals of the season.
The Skyhawks led 16-1 at intermission, outshooting the Grizzlies 25-4 in the first frame and 35-6 for the game.
Fort Lewis more than doubled up Adams State on ground balls (24-11), with
Ally Kvidera leading the way with six. Juneau added five ground balls.
Kathryn Dunn had four caused turnovers.
MacDonald played both of her goalkeepers evenly.
Genna Waugh (6-7 overall) made two saves while allowing one goal in the first half, while
Shelby Wichkoski allowed a pair of goals on the only two shots she faced in the second.
All three Grizzly goals were scored by Amanda Hisel, one of which was set up by LiErin Wilson. Hisel also won seven draw controls.
Kristiansen (1-10) made eight saves for the Grizzlies. She also had a team-high seven ground balls.
Fort Lewis finished the season 7-8 overall, 4-4 in
Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association games.
Adams State ends its second varsity campaign 1-10 overall, 0-8 in the WILA.
