Patient Skyhawks shut out St. Edward’s 2-0

Dean, Kordistos score goals as Schaul posts first collegiate shutout

Box Score

GOLDEN, Colo. — Casey Dean and Kosta Kordistos scored goals as No. 1 Fort Lewis (2-0-0 overall) defeated St. Edward's (0-2-0) 2-0 today at the CSM Soccer Field.

“We were pretty dominant,” said fourth-year FLC head coach Oige Kennedy. “We had most of the possession.”

Concentrating on possession, the patient Skyhawks waited until the 68th minute to strike.

“The first one was some great buildup down the left hand side,” said Kennedy. “Aaron Kloer made a great cross and Casey headed it into the left side.”

Fort Lewis added late insurance when Kordistos — the Most Outstanding Offensive Player of the 2011 NCAA Division II Final Four — scored his first of the season in the 88th minute.

“The second goal was a great goal,” said Kennedy. “We countered in the last couple of minutes. It was a classic Fort Lewis goal and what we want to do every time.”

The Skyhawk skipper said that defender Stephan Engeln evoked images of Fabian Kling when he made a run from his central defender position and sent a pass across the top of the box. Derek Freeman back-heeled the ball to Kordistos, who scored to account for the final 2-0 margin.

All totaled, the Skyhawks outshot the Hilltoppers 16-5, including an 8-2 advantage in shots on target. Alberto Capdepon led the way for FLC with four shots, two of which were stopped by SEU goalkeeper John Kaschak.

Ryan Schaul made a pair of saves in goal for the Skyhawks to post his first collegiate shutout and improve to 2-0-0 on the season. Kaschak made six stops for SEU.

The Skyhawks upped their lead to 7-1-1 in the all-time series with St. Edward's.

Fort Lewis continues on the road next weekend for a pair of nonconference tilts in the Phoenix area. Grand Canyon (1-0-0) hosts FLC at 9 p.m. MDT Friday at the GCU Soccer Stadium. The 'Lopes own a 4-1-0 lead in the all-time series, although the Skyhawks won the last meeting 2-1 in overtime on Sept. 21, 2004.

The Phoenix trek also includes a neutral-site matchup with California Baptist (2-0-0) at 8 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 10 in Gilbert, Ariz. The Skyhawks and Lancers, members of the PacWest Conference, have never met before. Both teams are defending national champions: FLC won the 2011 NCAA Division II crown, while California Baptist won the 2011 National Christian College Athletic Association title (just like Colorado Christian, one of FLC's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opponents, CBU hold dual membership in the NCAA-II and NCCAA).
