DURANGO, Colo. — Kate Sowell came off the bench to score a pair of goals as No. 14 Fort Lewis (5-0-1 overall, 2-0-1 in the
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) defeated Adams State 4-1 today at Dirks Field.
“
Kate Sowell is the highlight by scoring some goals and allowing our forwards to get some rest,” said sixth-year FLC head coach Damian Clarke.
The Skyhawks, who have now beaten Adams State 16 straight times, saw the Grizzlies take an early 1-0 lead when Kaylee Smith lofted a long free kick from the left side of the goal past
Amanda Raso at 7:41. Smith's third marker of the year ended Raso's shutout streak at 492:36 — the third longest clean sheet in school history.
“I thought once they scored the goal, we changed a little bit and matched their physicality,” said Clarke. “I'm a little bit disappointed. I thought we didn't come out in the beginning and weren't the team that we should be.”
Cannis scored the equalizer at 16:03 when she fielded a cross from
Sam Weiss in the box and shot to the far post, beating ASU goalkeeper Christie Stemple. The goal was Cannis' second of the year.
It wasn't long before the Skyhawks took a 2-1 lead when Weiss scored her team-leading eighth marker of the season on a blast from the top of the box at 22:40.
Brooke Milliet assisted on the play.
In the second half, it was all Sowell. She scored her first career goal at 59:39 after
Elena Benavides played a ball to the left flank that Sowell shot to the far post.
A little over seven minutes later, Sowell added an insurance goal when she rebounded Weiss' shot into the back netting at 66:47.
The Skyhawks split time evenly between Raso and freshman
Caitlyn Espinosa. Raso (4-0-1) earned the victory, making one save in the first half. Espinosa stopped the only shot she faced — a well-placed free kick by Smith — by knocking it just over the bar in the game's waning minutes.
Stemple (2-2-0) made seven saves for the Grizzlies, including a pair of late ones stopped one-v-one opportunities by
Serena Mancha and
Molly Celler from point-blank range.
Fort Lewis outshot Adams State 26-5 overall and 11-3 in shots on frame.
With the win, Fort Lewis extended its school-record home winning and unbeaten streaks to 12 and 13 games, respectively. The winning streak dates back to Sept. 16, 2011, while the unbeaten streak stretches to Nov. 14, 2010.
The Skyhawks continue their homestand at 1 p.m. Sunday when they face No. 11 UC-Colorado Springs (6-0-0, 2-0-0) at 1 p.m. Sunday.
