DURANGO, Colo. — Hannah Rather buried the rebound of Agnes Arnadottir's shot to lift UC-Colorado Springs (7-1-0 overall, 3-1-0 in the
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) to 1 1-0 overtime win over Fort Lewis (5-1-1, 2-1-1) today in a matchup of Top 25 women's soccer teams at Dirks Field.
The Mountain Lions turned a turnover into a 2-on-1 advantage midway through the first overtime. Arnadottir's low, hard shot toward the far post was blocked by Skyhawk goalkeeper
Amanda Raso, but the rebound caromed out to Rather who shot the ball into the middle of the wide-open goal for her fourth marker and first game-winner of the year for the No. 11 Mountain Lions at 96:25.
“A lack of concentration created that goal,” said sixth-year FLC head coach Damian Clarke, whose team lost to UCCS for the first time ever. The Skyhawks had won all six previous meetings between the two schools.
“I'm very disappointed. We didn't train well this week and this is the end result,” he said. “We got outworked at the end of the game and that's disappointing.”
The Skyhawk skipper praised the visiting Lions. “They have a lot of heart and are physically dangerous.”
No. 14 Fort Lewis saw two school records end with the loss: a 12-game home winning streak (dating back to Sept. 16, 2011) and a 13-game home unbeaten streak (dating back to Nov. 14, 2010).
The Skyhawks outshot UCCS 19-12, but their ability to put balls on Mountain Lion goalkeeper Kelly Schroeder allowed her to keep a clean sheet. Only two of FLC's 19 shots were on frame and both were routine saves for Schroeder, whose record improved to 7-1-0.
The Mountain Lions, on the other hand, were efficient with their 12 shots, sending six of them on target, including the pair that resulted in Rather's goal.
Fort Lewis' best chance came in the 70th minute when
Sam Weiss raced around the UCCS defense on the left flank, cut toward the box and rang a hard shot off the near post.
While possession tilted heavily toward FLC through most of the game and nearly the entire second half, the Skyhawks didn't manage a single shot in 6:25 of extra time.
Fort Lewis must refocus as it takes its first trip to the Denver metro area of the season. The Skyhawks square off against Metro State (5-2-1, 2-1-1) at 1 p.m. Friday and Colorado Christian (2-5-0, 0-3-0) at 11 a.m. next Sunday.
The Roadrunners lead the all-time series with Fort Lewis 23-11-7, but haven't beaten the Skyhawks since the second of three meetings in 2009 — a stretch that has seen FLC win two and tie three times.
Fort Lewis owns a 21-11-2 lead in the series with Colorado Christian and has won 15 straight in the series.
