DENVER — Brenden Hughes scored 5:22 into overtime to lead Metro State (6-3-0 overall, 5-3-1 in the
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) to a 1-0 win over Fort Lewis (5-3-1, 2-2-1) today at Auraria Field.
Andrew Mejia served up a ball into the box off a long set piece after a Fort Lewis foul near midfield that Hughes headed past Skyhawk goalkeeper
Ryan Schaul (5-3-1), ending 95-plus minutes of scoreless soccer and lifting the Roadrunners to a win over the defending NCAA Division II champions.
“We really dominated the game and just couldn't score,” said fourth-year Skyhawk skipper
Oige Kennedy. “We just needed a little bit of luck. Unfortunately, it didn't happen today.
“I think we had good possession and dominated the play. Most of the game was in their end,” he added. “We created some good opportunities, we just didn't get it done in front of goal.”
The Skyhawks dominated shots-on-goal by an 8-2 margin.
Kosta Kordistos, who had six of FLC's total shots and three on target, was robbed on a great chance in front of goal by MSUD keeper Shailer Thomas midway through the second stanza. The senior goalkeeper proved to be impenetrable, making eight saves on the afternoon.
“Their keeper did very well,” said Kennedy.
Metro was held to one shot on target through regulation, but that one nearly resulted in a goal in the 45th minute. Arek Raclawski was able to get behind the Skyhawk defense and fire a shot that Schaul stopped. The ball rolled over his shoulder and stopped on the goal line (the full ball must cross the line to count as a goal).
The Roadrunners got off a pair of shots on frame in the extra period, the first of which was saved by Schaul.
Metro State improved to 16-31-4 all-time against Fort Lewis.
The Skyhawks look to end their two-game losing skid at 1 p.m. Sunday, when they'll play Colorado Christian (1-8-0, 0-5-0) at the CCU Soccer Field in Lakewood. Fort Lewis has dominated the Cougars, winning 19 straight en route to a 36-5-2 lead in the all-time series. The last time Christian beat FLC at the CCU Soccer Field was a 2-1 win on Oct. 28, 1995. FLC is 15-0-1 in the last 16 meetings in Lakewood.
