Price’s late goal lifts Metro State to first win over Skyhawks since 2009

Fort Lewis shows improvement, but drops second straight 1-0 heartbreaker

Box score

DENVER — Karisa Price headed home a goal with 7:03 remaining to give Metro State (6-2-1 overall, 3-1-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) a 1-0 win and its first victory over Fort Lewis (5-2-1, 2-2-1) since 2009 today at Auraria Field.

Price's ninth marker of the season came less than five minutes after FLC's Emma Cannis hit the post on a header. Brittany Cito sent the cross across the box that Price sent past the charging Skyhawk keeper Amanda Raso.

“At the end of it, we hit the post on a really, really good movement forward and they scored a goal on a really good movement forward,” said sixth-year FLC head coach Damian Clarke.

“That team is definitely going to be hard to beat,” Clarke said of the Roadrunners. “They got over the hump in terms of beating us. It was a big win for them and they celebrated hard.”

In improving to 24-11-7 in the all-time series with Fort Lewis, the Roadrunners accomplished something that hadn't done in their previous five meetings with the Skyhawks — win. Fort Lewis picked up two victories and three ties over that five-game stretch, including a second-round NCAA Division II playoff game that was officially recorded as a 0-0 draw through two overtimes that saw FLC oust Metro 4-2 in the ensuing penalty kick shootout on Nov. 14, 2010, at Dirks Field in Durango.

Still, Clarke was upbeat after the game.

“We were much better today than we were Sunday,” he said, in reference to FLC's 1-0 overtime loss to then No. 11 (and current No. 17) UC-Colorado Springs. “I think we took a step forward in terms of some of the things we'd like to see the kids. We fought really hard to win second balls and just battled. We just weren't dangerous enough. We're missing something, but we'll get there. It's a long season.”

The game was even throughout. The Roadrunners outshot the Skyhawks 12-10 overall, but FLC maintained a slight 5-4 advantage in shots on target.

Sam Weiss led the FLC attack with three shots, including one on frame. Elena Benavides (two shots, one on goal) was the only other player to launch multiple shots.

Becca Medina fired five balls at the Skyhawk goal (one on frame) to lead the Roadrunners.

Jordan Simkins made four saves for Metro, while Raso stopped three shots for FLC.

Fort Lewis hopes to put an end to its short losing skid at 11 a.m. Sunday, when they travel to Lakewood to face Colorado Christian (2-5-0, 0-3-0). FLC owns a 21-11-2 lead in the series with Colorado Christian and has won 15 straight over the Cougars.
