LAKEWOOD, Colo. — Trevor Gibbons scored the first two goals of his collegiate career to lead defending NCAA Division II champion Fort Lewis (6-3-1 overall, 3-2-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) to a 3-1 win over Colorado Christian (1-9-0, 0-6-0) today at the CCU Soccer Field.

Gibbons scored the fastest goal from the start of a game in school history just 34 seconds into the match to give the Skyhawks a lead they'd never relinquish. Artur Piperkov sent a cross in from the right side that Gibbons headed to beat CCU goalie David Ilgenfritz.

With the score, Gibbons knocked FLC Athletic Hall of Famer Luc Cisna out of the record book for fastest goal in school history (49 seconds, at Colorado Mines, Oct. 31, 1997).

Kosta Kordistos quickly stretched the lead to 2-0 when he scored his third goal of the season off an Alberto Capdepon assist at 6:03.

“It was great scoring two goals in the first six minutes,” said fourth-year FLC head coach Oige Kennedy. “We obviously would have liked to score some more goals. We created some good chances and just couldn't get the finishing touch on things.”

Gibbons' second goal added insurance in the 82nd minute when he headed home Zac Lawrence's short cross from the left side of the box.

“We've asked him to do certain things in training and he's done them,” said Kennedy. “He went in on Friday against Metro and did very well. As a coach, when you give somebody an opportunity, you can only ask that they take it. He certainly did that today.”

The Cougars trimmed a 2-0 halftime deficit in half when Luke Burgard scored at 54:34. Burgard took a corner kick that clipped the top of the post and went in to account for the only shot to beat FLC goalkeeper Ryan Schaul.

The Skyhawks dominated the statistics, outshooting the Cougars 18-5 overall, 7-3 in shots on goal. Schaul made a pair of saves for FLC, while Ilgenfritz stopped four shots for CCU.

The win marked Fort Lewis' 20th straight victory over Colorado Christian, improving their lead in the series to 37-5-2.

The Skyhawks return home to Dirks Field for a mid-week clash with Colorado Mesa (5-2-1, 3-1-0) at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. FLC then plays at Adams State (1-8-0, 1-4-0) at 3:30 p.m. next Sunday.
