Offense explodes as Skyhawks rout Colorado Christian 6-0

Knewitz scores twice, Cannis, Celler, Sowell, Weiss add markers

Box score

LAKEWOOD, Colo. Kiss the scoring drought goodbye. When Sam Weiss found the back of the net just 2:13 into today's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference women's soccer match against Colorado Christian, Fort Lewis' 210-minute scoreless streak was over and the floodgates opened.

When the scoring storm had ended, the Skyhawks (6-2-1 overall, 3-2-1 RMAC) emerged with a 6-0 win over the Cougars (2-8-0, 0-6-0).

Weiss, who leads FLC with nine goals in just nine games in 2012, was assisted by Elena Benavides.

Less than 15 minutes later, the K.K. show began, as sophomore midfielder Allison Knewitz  took a low cross from Weiss on the right side of the box and buried her first career goal at 17:01. Benavides sprung Knewitz with a through ball from the center midfield to the left at 22:11 that Knewitz shot over the keeper's head to stretch the lead to 3-0.

“We weren't great in the first half, but did what we asked them to do when they got to the end line. I think all three goals came from work, getting to the end line,” said sixth-year FLC head coach Damian Clarke. “It's great to see K.K. get those goals. That's what we worked on in Saturday's training — to get the outside players to add to the game the way we hoped they would.”

The second half offered more of the same. Kate Sowell knocked home a rebound of Emma Cannis' shot at 72:52 for her third marker of the season. The two combined again at 81:58, this time Cannis scoring from 25 yards out off Sowell's assist. Molly Celler closed the books with her first career goal at 84:41, off Sowell's second assist of the game.

“Good for the forwards,” said Clarke. “Three of our four forwards scored goals today. I think we're starting to take a little pressure off of Sam and get some other players chipping in. Emma was fantastic and Elena had a fantastic day as well.”

The shots reflected the final score. Fort Lewis outshot CCU 21-4 overall, 13-3 in shots on goal.

Amanda Raso (5-2-1 overall) and Caitlyn Espinosa combined for the shutout, with each logging 45 minutes of scoreless work in goal. Espinosa made three saves, while Raso didn't face a shot on goal.

Fort Lewis continued its dominance off the Cougars, improving to 22-11-2 all-time against CCU, including 16 straight wins.

The Skyhawks face the RMAC's newest women's soccer team on Wednesday, when they travel to play Western State Colorado (0-10-0) at 3 p.m. at Gateway Field. The game against the Mountaineers won't count in league standings, as WSCU won't play a full RMAC schedule until 2013.

Fort Lewis continues on the road later in the week, traveling to Las Vegas, N.M. for a 7 p.m. Friday night tilt against New Mexico Highlands (3-6-0, 1-4-0), and to Alamosa, Colo., for a 1 p.m. showdown with Adams State (4-5-0, 2-3-0) next Sunday.
