DURANGO, Colo. — All five scorers scored in double figures as Fort Lewis (6-6 overall, 5-3 in the
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) rolled to a 78-58 win over New Mexico Highlands (3-10, 3-6) tonight in Whalen Gymnasium.
Senior guards
Alex Easterbrook and
Katerina Garcia combined for 16 assists in the victory, with Easterbrook notching a career-high nine helpers. As a team, FLC notched 26 assists.
Ashley Kuchar led the way with 15 points, while
Christie Groh (14), Easterbrook (14), Garcia (12) and
Erika Richards (12) all scored in double figures.
Fort Lewis shot a workmanlike 43.1 percent from the field (31 of 72), but blistered the nets for a 58.3 percent clip (21 of 36) in the first half as it built a commanding, 52-26 lead at intermission.
The Skyhawks also shot 35.5 percent (11 of 31) from behind the arc, with Easterbrook and Kuchar each knocking down three treys.
Fort Lewis also outrebounded the Cowgirls 41-33, with Richards and
Mary Brinton each grabbing seven caroms.
Highlands was led by Kate Cryderman (16 points), while Alyssa Lopez (12), China Smith (10) and Michelle Traynham all scored in double digits.
The Skyhawk defense stymied the Cowgirls all night long, holding WNMU to 40 percent from the field (20 of 50) and 23.5 percent from three-point range (4 of 17). WNMU committed 27 turnovers.
The Skyhawks conclude their two-game homestand at 5:30 p.m. tomorrow night when they host Western New Mexico (2-11, 1-8) in Whalen Gymnasium. The Mustangs picked up their first RMAC win of the 2012-13 season by beating Adams State 63-50 tonight.
