Ayala notches double-double, Herrera blocks eight shots in victory

Box score

DENVER Marcus Ayala notched his first career double-double and Alex Herrera blocked eight shots as No. 17 Fort Lewis (12-1 overall, 9-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) beat Regis (4-9, 3-7) 74-52 tonight in the Regis Fieldhouse.

Ayala led all scorers with 15 points while grabbing 10 rebounds to record his first career double-double. The senior guard came off the bench to connect on five of six charity shots and grab a team-high three steals.

Herrera's eight blocks were tied for second most in school history. Athletic Hall of Famer Steve Schutz rejected 10 Metro State shots on Dec. 13, 1996. Herrera tied Athletic Hall of Famer Rich Hillyer for second; Hillyer swatted his eight shots at Mesa State on Feb. 12, 1988.

“It was a great team win for us tonight,” said FLC associate head coach Bob Pietrack. “Alex was a real force in the middle. Marcus had a huge game for us, both in scoring and rebounding. Mike Matthews guarded great and really gave us a spark in the second half. Overall, it's another good league win on the road and we'll take it.”

Herrera added 11 points and four rebounds, while Matthews had 10 points and five assists.

Matthias Weissl also had a huge game and ultimately drove the final few nails into the Rangers' coffin.

The Rangers cut FLC's lead to just two points (44-42) on Kevin Marshall's layup with 11:32 remaining in the second half. Then Weissl got hot. Over the course of the next three minutes, he hit a pair of treys during a 10-0 FLC run. The Skyhawks would never relinquish their double-digit lead.

Dylan King scored 14 and connected on all three of his treys to lead the Rangers. Marshall added 11, while Joseph Bodman had 10 points.

Fort Lewis was strong from the field, shooting 52.8 percent (28 of 53). The Skyhawks also outrebounded Regis 31-26 and limited the Rangers to just 36.5 percent shooting (19 of 52).

Next up: a Top 25 showdown with first place in the RMAC standings on the line.

No. 2 Metro State (14-0, 10-0) defeated No. 13 Adams State 88-71 tonight, setting up the Roadrunners' second straight game against a Top 25 team when they host the Skyhawks at 7 p.m. tomorrow in Auraria Events Center.

“We're very excited for tomorrow and the challenge that Metro State brings,” said Pietrack.
