Box Score GOLDEN, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College men's soccer team lost a 5-2 decision Sunday afternoon against the 16
th-ranked team in the nation, Colorado School of Mines.
The loss puts the Skyhawks at 6-5-1 on the season and 3-5-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The win moves the Orediggers to 8-2-1 overall and 6-2-0 in the RMAC.
"We conceded a goal in the first 22 seconds but we battled back and we had a lot of possession, especially in the first half," said Fort Lewis College head men's soccer coach. "We tested their keeper five times in the first half. It was definitely a pretty even game despite the score line."
Colorado Mines' Joe Haines gave the Orediggers a quick 1-0 lead just 22 seconds into the game. Tesho Akindele netted his first of three goals in the game at 16:02 to boost Mines' lead to 2-0.
Tamino Kroeger put the Skyhawks on the scoreboard on the 24
th minute.
Austin Derksen threw the ball into Kroeger who turned his defender and finished from six yards out.
Seun Ogunmodede extended CSM's lead to 3-1 right before the half.
Akindele struck two more times in the second half of action, scoring his 10
th and 11
th goals of the season for the Orediggers.
Derksen recorded his second assist of the game, this time to
Jordan Alexander. Derksen took a free kick about 43 yards out that Alexander finished in goal. Jordan's goal came with less than four minutes left in regulation as the Orediggers held on for the win, 5-2.
Both teams were close in the shots category, with Colorado Mines recording a 15-14 lead, and a 10-5 advantage in shots on goal.
Fort Lewis will play at CSU-Pueblo Friday afternoon, before playing host to Regis University on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at Dirks Field.
