Box Score GUNNISON, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College football team overcame a nine point deficit Saturday afternoon at Western State to record a 10-9 win. The Skyhawks scored all 10 of their points in the fourth quarter to improve to 3-5 overall and 2-4 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
The Skyhawks first two drives in the first quarter resulted in a punt and a lost fumble. Both teams went scoreless in the first quarter before Western State broke the scoreless game with a touchdown in the second quarter.
Scottie Gallardo booted a punt 49 yards that started the Mountaineers drive on their own 49 yard. Four plays and 53 yards later Western State got on the scoreboard with 13:27 left in the second quarter when Austin Ekeler rushed in from 22 yards yard.
The Skyhawks next three drives resulted in a punt.
Broderick Sargent forced a fumble on Ekeler that
Jamal Campbell recovered on Western State's 34-yard line. The Skyhawks drove down the field 27 yards but missed a 24-yard field goal to keep them scoreless at halftime, 7-0.
The first three drives of the third quarter resulted in punts for the Skyhawks and Mountaineers. The Skyhawks drive that started at 6:48 in the third quarter resulted in a 12-yard quarterback sack in the end zone that caused a safety, giving WSCU a 9-0 lead.
Kipp Castanha broke the Skyhawks scoring drought early in the fourth quarter when he nailed a 23-yard field goal. On the ensuing drive for WSCU,
Drew Smith intercepted a pass and returned it 16 yards to set up the Skyhawks drive at Western State's 28-yard line. Fort Lewis then registered four plays for 28 yards to take a 10-9 lead they would not relinquish.
Nova Hardy caught an eight yard pass from
Jordan Doyle for the game-winning score.
The Skyhawks held WSCU to three-and-out on the next drive, but the Skyhawks fumbled on their own nine yard line. With Western State only seven yards out from scoring again, Thaddius Brown intercepted the ball in the end zone for a touchback, securing the Skyhawks lead and win.
Both teams each recorded exactly 218 yards of total offense.
Jordan Doyle completed 21 of 37 passes for 190 yard and one score. Doyle, who was sacked six times, also rushed 22 times for a loss of two yards.
Gallardo, who leads NCAA Division II in punting, averaged 48.7 yards on 10 punts against the Mountaineers.
Nova Hardy led the receiving corps with nine catches for 85 yards and a touchdown.
Joey Alvarez led both teams with 12 tackles (nine solo tackles). Alvarez also recorded one sack for a loss of seven yards and two tackles for a loss of nine yards.
Fort Lewis will play at home on Saturday, Nov. 2 against Adams State at 1 p.m.
