Box Score STEPHENVILLE, Texas – One week after eclipsing the century mark in their season opening game, the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team fell in their first road game of the season, 81-62 at Tarleton State University.
The Skyhawks move to 1-1 on the season while TSU improves to 2-0.
"They're obviously a really good team and playing on their home court, we had to play great to get out of here with a win," said Fort Lewis head women's basketball coach
Jason Flores. "Offensively we missed a lot of shots early that would have given us momentum. It was tough when we're not knocking down shots. They beat us on the boards handily which really hurt us. We started to play tentatively a bit when we got in foul trouble, and we can't play that way. The good thing is that Tarleton is a team who made the NCAA Tournament last year and they'll be back again this year. It's always good to face a quality opponent like TSU."
The Skyhawks made 23-of-56 field goals (41.1 percent), but netted only 11-of-19 from the charity stripe and 5-of-16 from long range.
Ashley Kuchar led the Skyhawks offense with 18 points on 7-of-14 field goal shooting. She netted 3-of-6 from long range and added three assists, one block and a steal.
Christie Groh contributed 14 points, four rebounds and an assist, and
Erika Richards added 13 points, six rebounds, an assist and a steal.
TSU's Kiara Wright led both teams with 22 points and 14 rebounds. Wright netted 8-of 12 field goals and added two blocks.
The Skyhawks will have a short turnaround as they play tomorrow at 11 a.m. (MST) against Texas Woman's University.
