Box Score HILO, Hawaii – Playing in their second straight overtime game, the Fort Lewis College men's basketball team fell to Tiffin University Wednesday night in double overtime, 102-92. The Skyhawks were outscored in the second overtime period 15-5.
"This was a great game tonight," said associate head coach Bob Pietrack. "It was a great college basketball game, especially this early in the season. Unfortunately the free throws were our Achilles heel tonight."
The Skyhawks went to the foul line 17 more times than Tiffin, but missed 19 times from the charity stripe. Fort Lewis finished the night hitting 24-of-43 free throws (55.8 percent) to Tiffin's 22-of-26 (84.6 percent).
One night after leading the Skyhawks in points against Northern New Mexico (37), Tomsick led the Skyhawks again with 22 points. He gave the Skyhawks their largest lead of the game at 13:49 after he made one of his four three-pointers to give FLC a 10 point lead (15-5).
Alex Herrera, who shared team high honors in most points scored, netted two free throws with 33 seconds remaining in regulation to give Fort Lewis a three-point lead. Eleven seconds later, Tiffin's Joe Graessle hit a three-pointer to tie the game and send it into overtime, 81-81.
In the first overtime period, Tiffin jumped out to an 85-81 lead but Tomsick quickly tied the game at 85-85 after netting a field goal from behind the arc and adding a free throw. JoeBell Austin added a field goal with 1:21 left in overtime to give FLC a two point lead, but Graessle struck again with 18 ticks remaining to tie the game and send it to a second overtime period, 87-87.
The second overtime period belonged to Tiffin as they netted six field goals, two of which were three-pointers, and made 7-of-10 free throws.
Tomsick finished the game making 7-of-15 field goals, 4-of-9 three-point field goals and 4-of-5 free throws. Wes McKenzie added 12 points on 4-of-7 field goals and 2-of-3 three-point field goals, and Oscar Garcia sank all four of his field goal attempts as part of his 11 points. Garcia also pulled down five rebounds.
The Skyhawks return to action Dec. 6-7 when they play their first home games of the season against UC-Colorado Springs and CSU-Pueblo. Both games will tip off at 7:30 p.m. at Whalen Gymnasium.
