Sam Weiss netted her 10
th goal of the season Sunday afternoon at Dirks Field against No. 2 Colorado School of Mines, marking only the fifth time all season the Orediggers had conceded a goal. However, it was the only goal of the game for Fort Lewis, ranked No. 21 in the nation, as they eventually dropped a 2-1 overtime decision.
Weiss took a pass from Romero and had a long breakaway through the center of the field that resulted in a one-on-one with the Orediggers goalie. Weiss flipped the ball around the keeper to give the Skyhawks a 1-0 lead in the 25
th minute.
In the 75
th minute, CSM's Jordan Hopper took a corner and fed Cari Smith who fired on goal from 20 yards out to tie the game 1-1, and eventually lead the game into overtime. With only 34 ticks left in the first overtime period, Jaclyn Knott maneuvered past the Skyhawks goal for the game winning goal, keeping the Orediggers record unbeaten at 17-0-1 and 14-0-0 in the league.
The game marked the last regular season game for both teams as they head into conference playoffs.
Colorado Mines, ranked second in the nation, is the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference regular season champion and will be hosting the women's final four tournament.
The Skyhawks, who finished the regular season 14-4 overall and 10-4 in the RMAC, are the No. 3 seed in the tournament and will play host to sixth seed UC-Colorado Springs on Wednesday, Nov. 6 at 2:30 p.m. The winner of that game will advance to the final four and play No. 2 seed Metro State.
