Box Score ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's basketball team overcame a 16-point first half production to outscore the Adams State Grizzlies in the second half, 40-26, and earn their second Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference win of the season, 56-44.
The Skyhawks trailed by two at the break, 18-16.
"They (Adams State) slowed it down tonight; they tried to take the air out of the ball," said Fort Lewis College head women's basketball coach
Jason Flores. "They got down to one second a lot on the shot clock and had several shot clock violations. They were trying to keep us from getting up and down the court, which was a little frustrating. In the second half, we were able to speed up the game up a bit with some pressing and we turned up our defensive intensity. That allowed us to get into a better rhythm offensively."
Senior Erika Groh led the Skyhawks with 19 points and nine rebounds. Groh netted 6-of-11 from the floor and made all seven free throw attempts.
Erika Richards followed with 12 points on 4-of-10 field goals, and
Mary Brinton chipped in eight points and seven rebounds.
Despite shooting 32 percent from the floor in the first half, Fort Lewis came back to net 50 percent in the second half and hit 44.7 percent of their field goals for the game. FLC was solid from the charity stripe, making 14-of-17 free throws for 82.4 percent.
The Skyhawks dominated the boards, out-rebounding the Grizzlies 39-23. Fort Lewis held ASU's leading scorer to zero points, and also held them to a 29 percent from the floor.
Fort Lewis (5-2, 2-1 RMAC) will remain on the road next weekend when they travel to Colorado Mesa Friday night and Western State on Saturday. The Mavericks and Mountaineers are on top of the league standings with a 4-0 record. Both games will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. each night and can be heard on KIUP 930 AM and
