Bench Play Helps Skyhawks Win in Overtime at Adams State, 97-93

Box Score ALAMOSA, Colo. – Led by Mike Matthews, the Fort Lewis College men's basketball bench play helped the Skyhawks to a 97-93 overtime win Saturday night at Adams State University.

"We had five players off our bench that brought us back to win tonight," said Fort Lewis College associate head coach Bob Pietrack.  "Our bench came through big time.  They brought us back.  Every guy contributed to us winning the game."

Matthews was near perfect from the floor, scoring 17 points after making 5-of-6 field goals, all three three-point field goal attempts and all four free throws.  He combined with the Skyhawks bench to out-score the Grizzlies bench, 38-28.

The Skyhawks trailed by as many as 12 points in the first half before they went on a 17-7 run.  Matthews cut the lead down to two points after sinking a three-pointer with seven seconds left in the first half.  However, the Grizzlies went into the intermission with a five point lead, 39-34, after DeQuan Jones made all three free throw attempts.  Jones was fouled on a three-point attempt as time expired to boost the Grizzlies lead to five.

Both teams traded the lead six times in the second half and had the score tied 10 times in the final 20 minutes of regulation.  ASU held an eight point lead with four minutes left in regulation, but the Skyhawks tied the game and then took a one-point lead, 79-78, after going on an 8-0 run.

Jaree Crawford made one of two free throws to give ASU an 83-81 lead with five seconds remaining in regulation.  Nick Tomsick drove the length of the court in four seconds and was fouled on a layup.  Tomsick, the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference leading scorer, swished both free throws to tie the game and send it into overtime.

Four Skyhawks contributed offensively in the extra period.  Tomsick, Matthews and Jared Smith each hit a three-point field goal, while Smith added two free throws.  Cade Kloster, who came off the bench to score 10 points, added a layup in overtime as he netted 4-of-9 field goals for the game.

Tomsick led all scorers with 25 points.  He made 6-of-12 field goals (4-of-8 three-point field goals) and 9-of-13 free throws. He also pulled down seven rebounds and stole the ball twice.  Alex Herrera, who ranks second in the league in points per game, added 20 points, seven rebounds and eight blocks.  This marked the third time in his career he has blocked eight shots in a game.  Herrera netted 4-of-5 field goals and 12-of-16 free throws.

The Skyhawks shot 50.9 percent from the floor (28-55), 46.2 percent from long range (12-26) and 72.5 percent from the charity line (29-40).  They committed 16 turnovers and stole the ball nine times.

The Grizzlies, who were led by Julian Scott with 22 points and nine rebounds, dominated the paint with 34 points compared to FLC's 22 points.
