Box Score GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The fifth ranked team in NCAA Division II remained undefeated Friday night as the Colorado Mesa Mavericks handed the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team an 89-65 setback at Brownson Arena in Grand Junction, Colo. The loss moves the Skyhawks to 5-3 on the season and 2-2 in conference play, while the Mavericks improve to 9-0 overall and 5-0 in the league.
"We started slow tonight, but credit to them (CMU), they're a really good team," said Skyhawks head women's basketball coach
Jason Flores. "They shot well. All five players were in a great rhythm. We had a good 10 minutes to end the first half and then to start the second half, but the last 10 minutes was tough. They went to the free throw line 32 times and they shot it well. When they do that it's tough to beat them, especially when they're at home."
The Mavericks' Taylor Rock hit a three-pointer to start the game with a 3-0 lead they would not lose. The Skyhawks trailed at the half, 44-30, but started the second half strong on a 14-2 run to cut the lead to within two points, 46-44.
Fouls hindered the Skyhawks in the second, as they committed 19 of their 27 fouls in the second period of play. As a result, the Mavericks went to the line 24 times in the second half, sinking 20 (83.3 percent). After the Skyhawks cut the lead to within two, CMU went on a 16-6 run and closed out the game sinking 13-of-17 free throws in the final 10 minutes.
Erika Richards recorded a team high 21 points on 7-of-14 field goals and 6-of-8 free throws. Richards added three rebounds, an assist and a steal.
Christie Groh and
Mary Brinton each chipped in 11 points. Brinton made all four field goal attempts and 3-of-6 from the charity stripe.
Sharaya Selsor lead all scorers with 29 points as the Mavericks had five players score in double digits. Selsor netted 14-of-15 free throws and added eight rebounds and six assists.
The Skyhawks were out-rebounded, 43-29, including 34-22 on the defensive end of the court as CMU tallied 15 second-chance points to the Skyhawks four.
Fort Lewis made 22-of-58 field goals (37.9 percent), 2-of-12 three-point field goals (16.7 percent) and 19-of-27 free throws (70.4 percent). CMU netted nearly 50 percent from the floor (27-of-55) and 84.4 percent from the free throw line (27-of-32).
The Skyhawks will play their final game of the calendar year tomorrow night at Western State. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
