Box Score GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College men's basketball team fell to a solid shooting Colorado Mesa team Friday night in Grand Junction, Colo., 93-67. The loss put the Skyhawks even in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play with a 2-2 record and a 5-3 overall mark. CMU improves to 6-3 on the season and 4-1 in league games.
Fort Lewis led by as many as nine points in the first half, but CMU went on a 12-4 run to close out the half and take a 36-31 lead at the break. The second half belonged to the Mavericks as they out-scored FLC by 21 points and led by as many as 29 with 56 seconds left in regulation.
The Mavericks shot a blistering 55.9 percent from the floor (33-of-59), including 46.2 percent from long range (6-of-13) and 80.8 percent from the charity stripe (21-of-26).
Fort Lewis, which was led by
Nick Tomsick's 15 points, netted 38.2 percent in field goals (21-of-55) and 65 percent from the free throw line (13-of-20).
Tomsick, who was the only Skyhawk to net more than nine points, added three assists and a steal. Nine of his 15 points came from three-point range (3-of-9). Junior
Alex Herrera was held to a season low eight points. Herrera pulled down five rebounds and blocked three shots.
Both teams committed 18 turnovers each, but CMU netted 25 points off of the Skyhawks turnovers, compared to FLC's 14 points off turnovers. CMU dominated in the paint, posting 36 points to the Skyhawks 16, but the Skyhawks bench outscored the Mavericks, 31-20.
CMU's Ryan Stephan tallied a game high 32 points and 13 rebounds. He also contributed three assists, three blocks and two steals.
Fort Lewis will play at Western State Saturday night at 7:30 p.m.
