Box Score GUNNISON, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College men's basketball team scored the fifth most points in school history Saturday night at Western State, posting a 120-78 win over the Mountaineers from Paul Wright Gym. The 120 points are the most ever scored by the Skyhawks against an NCAA opponent, and the third time this season they have reached the century mark.
Fort Lewis improves to 6-3 on the year and 3-2 in conference play. The Mountaineers remain without a win, falling to 0-9 overall and 0-6 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference games.
Thirteen Skyhawks scored at least three points Saturday night, with
Nick Tomsick leading all scorers with 18 points. As a team, Fort Lewis recorded season highs in three-point field goals made (21), three-point field goals attempted (34), three-point field goal percentage (61.8), and rebounds (57). The Skyhawks 21 made three-pointers also set a new team record, breaking the old record of 18.
The Skyhawks made 38-of-73 field goals for 53.4 percent, the second highest mark this season. They out-rebounded Western State by 31 caroms, 57-26.
"We shot well and everyone contributed," said Fort Lewis College associate head coach
Bob Pietrack. "It was a nice bounce back win for the team, especially after last night's difficult loss."
Mike Matthews made a three-pointer nine seconds into the game to give the Skyhawks a 3-0 lead they would not relinquish. Fort Lewis led by as many as 46 with three minutes remaining in regulation.
Cade Kloster came off the bench to net 16 points and dish out three assists. Kloster netted 5-of-7 field goals and 3-of-4 three-point field goals as part of his 16 points.
Alex Herrera recorded 13 points, nine caroms, an assist and five blocked shots.
Lucas Archuleta chipped in 11 points, with nine of them coming from downtown.
Jordan Adams led Western State with 15 points.
The Skyhawks will return home Jan. 3-4 to play host to Chadron State and Black Hills State. Both games will tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
