COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The potential for another round of cold temperatures and more precipitation in the Pikes Peak region late in the weekend has forced changes in the softball series between Fort Lewis College and UC-Colorado Springs.
Originally scheduled as doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 23-24, the teams will play a tripleheader beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday and a single 10 a.m. game on Sunday.
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference code limits teams from competing in softball when the wind chill is below 25 degrees and The Weather Channel's latest forecast puts Sunday's high at 27 degrees with a strong north wind. Once a series begins, the code requires teams to complete as many games as possible within a two-day span.
The series between the Skyhawks and Mountain Lions marks the RMAC openers for each team. Fort Lewis is currently 2-3 overall, while UC-Colorado Springs is 5-4-1. All four games are to be played on Mountain Lion Field.
UCCS leads the all-time series 46-32 and is 24-16 against Fort Lewis on Mountain Lion Field. The Skyhawks have enjoyed much better success since
Kira Zeiter took over as head coach in 2011, though, going 6-2 the past two years.
