GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Colorado Mesa (11-6-1 overall, 9-2-1 in the
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) swept a softball doubleheader from Fort Lewis (5-12, 3-9) Saturday at Bus Berman Field, winning 7-2 and 13-2, the latter coming in five innings due to the eight-run rule.
“We played hard today,” said third-year FLC head coach
Kira Zeiter. “We will work on getting the consistency down at the plate to put more runs on the board. That's the goal for tomorrow.”
Fort Lewis jumped out to a 2-0 lead scoring two runs in the top of the third in the opener, with
Kaitlyn Bending and
Destinee DeHerrera delivering RBI singles.
The Mavs began to rally in the bottom of the frame, though, cut the deficit in half on an RBI single by Makayla Kovac that scored Nicole Robinson.
CMU added three runs in the fourth and three in the six for a 7-2 victory. The Mavericks scored three runs on three hits in the fourth on three consecutive singles by Megan Brown (bunt), Nicole Robinson and a pinch hitter Brooke Ortale.
The Maverick sixth inning resulted in three runs four hits as Kovac and Jessica Severinsen led-off the inning with back-to-back homers. Lindsay Drayer's RBI triple to right center scored Lisa Pille, who followed the long balls with a single.
Severinsen improved to 8-1 in the circle, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out four in seven innings of work.
Robinson went 3-for-5 and Kovac was 1-of-3 with a game high 3 RBI.
Mariah Stuart went 2-for-3 for FLC in the opener.
Kassie Haubert (1-7) allowed six runs (five earned) on nine hits while striking out two before being lifted by reliever
Katie Watkins.
In game two's 13-2 victory, the Mavericks scored in three of the four innings they batted, including a six-run second inning and five-run third. CMU's first inning included a two-run homer by Ortale.
Fort Lewis answered back a solo round-tripper by
Hayley Bolyard in the top of the second, cutting the lead in half. The tater was Bolyard's second of the year.
CMU exploded for 11 runs in the next two innings combining for 11 hits, taking advantage of two Skyhawk errors, two wild pitches and one hit batter.
Chelsea Rodriguez accounted for FLC's other game-two run with a solo shot in the fourth.
Four Mavericks registered double-digit hits while seven batters recorded knocks. Ortale was 3-for-3 with four RBI.
Courtney Shreves earned the victory in the five-inning game. Shreves went three full innings, allowing one run on two hits, zero walks and three strikeouts. Ashley Pulido closed out the final two innings in her first outing since shoulder surgery last summer. Pulido gave up one run on two hits and struck out two batters.
The Skyhawks used all three of their pitchers in the nightcap, with
Victoria Johnson (2-3) suffering the loss. Johnson allowed seven runs (two earned) and six hits in 1.2 innings of work.
The Mavs and Skyhawks conclude the series with a doubleheader tomorrow starting at 11 a.m.
