Game 1 – FLC 6, CMU 2
Game 2 – CMU 8, FLC 3
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Fort Lewis (6-13 overall, 4-10 in the
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) split a softball doubleheader with Colorado Mesa (12-7-1, 10-3-1) Sunday at Bergman Field, winning 7-2 and 13-2, the latter coming in five innings due to the eight-run rule.
“Today felt like an all-around better day of softball for us in all aspects,” said third-year FLC head coach
Kira Zeiter. “We are a team still growing and improving as a group, and today was a positive step in the right direction.”
Kassie Haubert spun a complete game gem in the opener to improve to 2-7 for the Skyhawks. The fifth-year senior allowed just two runs on six hits and three walks while striking out seven Mesa batters.
Kaylynn Harmon and
Hayley Bolyard delivered the big blows for FLC. Harmon hit a two-out, two-run single down the right field line in a three-run fifth inning that put the Skyhawks ahead for good 4-2. Bolyard added insurance with a solo homer down the left field line in the sixth — her third of the season.
Kaitlyn Bending went 3-for-4 for FLC with an RBI and a run scored in the opener, while Harmon and
Chelsea Rodriguez each had two hits.
Jessica Severinsen allowed six runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings of work to fall to 8-2 on the season for CMU.
In the nightcap, CMU's Brooke Ortale hit a grand slam to power the Mavs to a split on the day and a 3-1 series win in a back-and-forth affair.
The Mavs grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second on Severinsen's solo shot over the left field wall and added another run on a leadoff homer in the fourth by Makayla Kovac.
Fort Lewis took the lead in the top of the fifth by punching through five hits.
Chelsea Rodriguez belted her fourth long ball of the season to trim the lead to 1-0, while Bolyard delivered an RBI double and
Mariah Stuart a run-scoring single.
Ortale's bases-clearing homer in the sixth was part of a six-run, six-hit frame for CMU.
CMU's Courtney Shreves improved to 4-4 on the year, allowing three runs on 12 hits while striking out six.
Kovac went 3-for-3 at the plate for CMU as seven Mavs registered at least one hit in game two.
Bolyard, Rodriguez, Stuart and
Kamali'i Peneku each had two hits for the Skyhawks.
Victoria Johnson (2-4) allowed six runs on six hits to take the loss.
Fort Lewis travels to Regis (3-19, 2-9) for a four-game set next weekend. Doubleheaders are slated for noon Saturday and 11 a.m. Sunday.
