ALAMOSA, Colo. — Defense shined Saturday afternoon for the Fort Lewis women's lacrosse team (2-1 overall, 2-1 in the Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association), as the Skyhawks continued their mastery of Adams State (0-1, 0-1) 10-4 at the ASU Lacrosse & Soccer Field.

“Our defense played amazing today,” said third-year FLC lacrosse coach Kelsey MacDonald. “Overall, our defense won the game. They played very well, coming up with big stops on the field. We played as a team today and it finally came together. We played a solid 60 minutes of Fort Lewis lacrosse.”

The school record book was rewritten in the process. Four players met or exceeded the old standard of five caused turnovers in a game — Katlyne Duffey and Amanda Hoffmeyer established a new single game record for caused turnovers by forcing seven each, while Amanda Cawker added six and Ally Kvidera five. As a team, the Skyhawks had 29 caused turnovers, three more than any other game in school history.

Duffey also controlled eight ground balls, second most in school history. Cawker had a career-best seven ground balls. FLC's 34 ground balls was fifth most in the FLC record book.

Putting shots past goalkeepers was tough for both teams. “It was a very slow game,” said MacDonald. FLC led 3-1 at intermission.

Jam Vertner notched the first hat trick of her young career, leading the Skyhawks with three goals. Ally Kvidera added a goal and three assists. Kathryn Dunn and Kylie Smith each scored twice for the Skyhawks, while Amanda Cawker and Marissa DiCecco each scored once. DiCecco, Hoffmeyer, Shannon McDermott and Carly Smoke had assists.

Lexy Hamilton gave the Grizzlies a 1-0 lead on a free position shot three minutes into the game, but the Skyhawks reeled off the next six goals to take control of the game, 6-2.

Adams State trimmed the margin to 6-3, but the Skyhawks put four in the back of the net in a six minute stand midway through the second half to break the game open.

Hamilton was one of six Grizzlies to score: Megan Daly, Amanda Hisel and Heather Jones had the other markers.

Alyssa Spencer was made one save while improving her record to 2-1 for the Skyhawks.

ASU's Danica Kristiansen made 13 saves and fell to 0-1 on the season.

Today's game was the season opener for the Grizzlies. FLC improved to 5-0 all-time against Adams State and is 3-0 on the ASU Lacrosse and Soccer Field.

Fort Lewis continues its road trip in Pennsylvania, where they'll next face Chestnut Hill (0-0) at 2 p.m. (MST) Monday. Other games on the road trip include West Chester (1 p.m. MST, Thursday, March 7) and Millersville (11 a.m. MST, Saturday, March 9).
