Rangers sweep Skyhawks in RMAC softball doubleheader

Series moved up a day due to predictions of bad weather in Denver area

Kassie Haubert belted her fourth career homer Friday in FLC's 8-6 loss at Regis.
Game 1: RU 8, FLC 6
Game 2: RU 10, FLC 2 (5)

DENVER Regis (5-20 overall, 4-10 in the Rocky Mountain  Athletic Conference) swept Fort Lewis (6-15, 4-12) in a RMAC softball doubleheader today at the Regis Softball Field, winning 8-6 and 10-2, the latter in a game shortened to five innings due to the eight-run rule.

Though more than half of the regular season remains, the four-game series has big playoff implications for two teams that qualified for the RMAC tournament a year ago — a three-day event that FLC eventually won and earned an automatic bid to the NCAA playoffs — but are currently on the outside looking in. The Rangers leaped over the Skyhawks into ninth place in the league standings; the top eight teams will qualify for postseason play.

Regis grabbed a 5-0 lead in the first inning of the opener, added timely insurance and held on for an 8-6 victory.

The Skyhawks trimmed the lead to 6-3 in the top of the third by sandwiching two big hits around a Regis throwing error. Destinee DeHerrera hit an RBI triple and came home on the errant throw to get FLC on the board. Kassie Haubert — a pitcher by trade who rarely cracks the batting order — then homered to pull FLC to within three. For Haubert, it was just her fourth career round-tripper and first since April 3, 2010.

After Regis added a seventh run, the Skyhawks scratched their way back to 7-6 in the fifth thanks to a three-run frame in which they strung together walks, hit batters and timely hits. Hayley Bolyard walked in a run, Mariah Stuart drove in another when she was hit by a pitch and Missy Fundora hit an RBI single to center to account for the scoring.

But Regis added another in the bottom of the fifth and held off the Skyhawks in the final two innings — frames that saw FLC strand three baserunners.

Nicole Hull (3-7) pitched 4.1 innings to earn the win, allowing six runs (four earned) while allowing seven hits and five free passes. Rachel Knudson picked up the save by pitching 2.2 innings of scoreless, hitless softball.

Haubert (2-8) allowed eight runs on 13 hits and three walks while striking out seven Rangers.

The senior hurler went 2-for-2 at the plate with two runs scored and an RBI on her solo homer. Fundora and Kaylynn Harmon each went 2-for-4.

Rachel Illias had three hits in four trips to the plate for the Rangers, belting a pair of doubles while scoring two runs and driving in another. Taylor Wilcox went 2-for-4 with three RBI for Regis.

The Rangers made quick work of the Skyhawks in the nightcap, shellacking Skyhawk pitchers Victoria Johnson (2-4) and Katie Watkins for 10 runs on 11 hits — six of which were doubles.

Johnson lasted just 2.2 innings while allowing five runs (two earned) and five hits. Watkins surrendered five runs (three earned) on five hits in two innings of work.

Sydney Gaffin (2-11) picked up just her second victory of the season by limiting FLC to just four hits and two runs in five innings in the circle.

Myndee Thompson drove in both FLC runs and went 2-for-3 at the plate.

Wilcox went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Rangers. Hull also went 2-for-3 and scored two runs, while Shannon Massine had a pair of hits and two runs scored.

“We are looking to really wake up the bats for tomorrow,” said third-year FLC head coach Kira Zeiter. “We are a strong offensive team and ready to show it in tomorrow's games.”

The four-game set was originally scheduled for a Saturday-Sunday affair, but was moved up a day due to weekend forecasts of inclement weather in the Denver area.
