DURANGO, Colo. — Erin Todd scored six goals to lead Regis (5-3 overall, 4-0 in the
Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association) to a 17-9 win over Fort Lewis (4-4, 3-2) Saturday afternoon in blustery conditions at Ray Dennison Memorial Field.
“Regis just wanted it more than us,” said third-year FLC head coach Kelsey MacDonald, who saw her Skyhawks fall to 0-10 all-time against the Rangers. “We have all of the tools, but we didn't have the passion. We had a glimpse of it in the beginning of the second half.”
Todd scored twice in the first minute to stake the Rangers to a quick, 2-0 lead. Her first came when she juked through traffic just 8 seconds after the opening draw; her second came 28 seconds later off an assist by Hilary Duda.
The Skyhawks trimmed the lead in half when
Jessica Norby set up
Marissa DiCecco's seventh goal of the season 3:28 into the game, but the Rangers reeled off four straight in the next seven minutes to extend their lead to 6-1. Erin Dybus, Duda, Sydney Tomlinson and Maribel Gallegos all scored during the sequence.
A free position shot by
Ally Kvidera started a 3-2 mini rally by the Skyhawks midway through the first half — a stretch that saw them cut the lead to 8-4 — but Todd squelched any hopes of a comeback by scoring three more goals in the final seven minutes of the first half to put the Rangers ahead 13-4 at intermission.
Fort Lewis managed to hold Regis scoreless in the first 12:39 of the second half and cut into the RU lead on goals by
Ellie Carpenter and Kvidera. On the latter goal, Kvidera became the first player in the five-year history of FLC lacrosse to notch 100 career markers.
“That's a great accomplishment as a player,” MacDonald said of Kvidera's historic feat. “Ally has been a solid part of our attack ever since our freshman year.”
But the Rangers reeled off four straight scores to extend their lead to 17-6.
The Skyhawks scored three straight in the final 4:41 — goals by
Kathryn Dunn,
Abby Kvidera and Carpenter — to make the final score 17-9.
The final deficit would have been even higher without a near record-breaking performance by FLC freshman goalkeeper
Alyssa Spencer, who record 16 saves — second most in school history, behind a 20-save effort by Nic Laros against Converse on March 6, 2010. Spencer and
Katlyne Duffey shared the team lead in ground balls with five.
“Alyssa had a solid game in the net,” said MacDonald. “She pretty much saved the game from behind higher scoring than it was. The problem was we wouldn't come up with the rebound. She played amazing and definitely kept us within a 10-goal spread.”
Ball control failed the Skyhawks, as they committed 29 miscues — second most in the FLC record book (31, at Converse, March 6, 2010). Regis didn't fare much better with 24 turnovers.
“Weather is always an equalizer, so you can't blame the weather,” said MacDonald. “Our turnovers were because we weren't making the smart decision with the ball.”
The teams played in chilly conditions, with the temperature holding at 28 degrees throughout the game and wind gusts of 37 miles per hour and an occasional splattering of light snow.
The Rangers led in most of the “hustle” categories, including draw controls (17-11) and ground balls (31-25) and owned decisive advantages in shots (39-19) and shots on goal (33-15).
Gianna Lombardi was called upon to make just six saves for Regis.
Todd finished the game with six goals (on six shots, no less), a pair of assists and three draw controls. Duda, Dybus and Emily Behr each scored twice.
The Kvidera twins and Carpenter each scored twice for the Skyhawks. Norby had a pair of assists.
The teams met at midfield in a pregame ceremony to observe a moment of silence for Seton Hill lacrosse coach Kristina Quigley and bus driver Anthony Guaetta, who were killed a week ago today when the Griffins were traveling to play Millersville. Quigley, who was six months pregnant, is survived by her husband, Glenn, and their one-year-old son, Gavin. A table was set up to collect donations for a scholarship fund set up in Gavin Quigley's name. Regis and Fort Lewis wore crimson and gold athletic tape in honor of the Griffins.
The Skyhawks continue their two-game home stand at 3 p.m. on Monday, April 1 when they host defending WILA champ Lindenwood (7-0, 2-0) at Ray Dennison Memorial Field. The Lions lead the all-time series with FLC 2-0.
