DURANGO, CO - Another windy day at Fort Lewis College's Aspen Field welcomed the Skyhawks and the Western New Mexico Mustangs back for a second day and another doubleheader. Just like the previous day's series, the Skyhawks (13-20, 11-17 RMAC) and Mustangs (16-25, 13-17 RMAC) split their games.
WNM won the first game in dominant fashion, 8-0 in five innings. Driven by Tessa Fanning (2-3 with a homerun and an RBI) the Mustangs jumped all over the home team. After taking a 6-0 lead in the second inning, the game was never in doubt.
WNM's Domi Shone (8-12) was strong on the mound, allowing only two hits through four innings.
Kassie Haubert and
Katie Watkins shared the pitching duties for the Skyhawks with Kassie (4-11) picking up the loss.
The second game looked like it might be a continuation of the first, with the Mustangs taking the early 1-0 lead. A big fourth inning, however, saw the Skyhawks score four runs, take control and the win 4-2.
FLC's
Myndee Thompson continued her strong play from Saturday, going 2-3.
Kaylynn Harmon also went 2-3. The Mustangs had 11 hits off of Skyhawk
Victoria Johnson (7-5) in her six innings of work, but her six strikeouts and FLC's solid defense kept the WNM scoring to a minimum.
Katie Watkins picked up the save, her fourth.
Amber Taynton and Domi Shone split the pitching for the Mustangs, with Amber (1-3) earning the loss.
The weekend saw the Skyhawks and Mustangs split their two-day series 2-2. The teams are ranked seventh (Mustangs) and ninth (Skyhawks) in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference standings.
Up next for the Skyhawks is a weekend series at Black Hills State on April 20 and 21.
