LAKEWOOD, CO - Things were beginning to look desperate for Fort Lewis College Softball. After dropping their first game 9-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Softball Championship Tournament to Colorado Mesa University, the Skyhawks were playing for their season in the second game against Colorado Christian University. As the sun dipped below the mountains, it would be the Skyhawks surviving to play again tomorrow.
The first game saw seventh seeded FLC play well in the beginning, but fade against second seed Colorado Mesa. After being tied 2-2 going into the fourth inning, the Mavericks rattled off seven more runs for which the Skyhawks had no answer.
Megan Smith led the Mavericks in hitting, going 3-4, while the Skyhawks struggled to get much offense going at all.
Missy Fundora led FLC with a 2-4 outing. Jessica Severinsen picked up the win on the mound for CMU. The Skyhawk's
Kassie Haubert had the loss.
The second game was win or go home for both FLC and Colorado Christian. Making a win by the Skyhawks even more daunting was the fact that they were playing on CCU's home field. Still, things looked promising for most of the game, with FLC jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Down 4-0 after five innings, the Cougars came storming back, tying the game with two runs in the sixth inning and two more in the seventh.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, with FLC's
Chelsea Rodriguez on second and
Destinee DeHerrera on first, the Skyhawks were looking for one more hit. It was
Kassie Haubert who stepped to the plate and delivered a single that scored Rodriguez in a close play at the plate and preserved FLC's season for another day.
To go along with Haubert's big hit and RBI,
Kamali'i Peneku,
Destinee DeHerrera, and
Erica Conley each delivered two hits of their own. Pitcher
Victoria Johnson got the win for the Skyhawks.
The Cougars' hitting was led by Shelbi Long and Stephanie Tatham, each going 2-3 from the plate. Pitcher Genevive Reyna took the loss.
The RMAC tournament continues for the Skyhawks on Saturday, May 4 when they take on the loser of the Colorado Mines and Adams State game at Lakewood Park at 1 p.m. The Mines-Adams game will be played Saturday morning. Check
