Box Score LAS VEGAS, N.M. – New Mexico Highlands University scored 21 second half points to finalize a 31-20 win over the Fort Lewis College football team Saturday after at Perkins Stadium in Las Vegas, N.M. Both teams entered the game with a 1-1 record with today's game marking the first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matchup of the season.
The Cowboys took an early 7-0 lead in the first half when Akeelie Mustafa returned a punt 72 yards for a score. Five drives later and a missed 56-yard field goal attempt by NMHU, the Skyhawks drove down the field 62 yards and
Dewaun Wesley evened the score from a three yard run into the end zone.
New Mexico Highlands converted a 24-yard field goal attempt at 4:49 to give them a 10-7 lead at the half. The Cowboys scored 14 unanswered points in the third quarter to boost their lead to 24-7 heading into the final quarter.
Senior
Doyle Bode capped off a 15-play, 80-yard drive at 14:09 in the fourth quarter when he caught a four yard pass from
Jordan Doyle. The Cowboys answered with a touchdown of their own just three plays later to extend the lead to 31-14.
Two drives later, Doyle completed three of four passes to cut the lead to 31-20 with 5:17 left in regulation. Bode caught his second touchdown pass of the season, this time a 50-yard score.
Doyle completed 20-of-38 passes for 241 yards and two scores (one interception). Doyle, whose longest pass of the day was a 55-yarder, was sacked six times by the Cowboys. Bode and
Nova Hardy combined for 140 receiving yards on six catches. Bode caught four passes for 71 yards and two scores, while Hardy notched two receptions for 69 yards. Wesley recorded his second straight 100-plus rushing game. Wesley carried the ball 21 times for a game high 112 yards, averaging 5.3 yards per carry.
The Cowboys Emmanuel Lewis completed 19-of-36 passes for 365 yards and three scores. Tyler Slavin pulled in four catches for 147 yards, while teammate Josh Nobles caught nine passes for 134 yards.
The Skyhawks posted 25 first-downs, compared to NMHU's 18. Fort Lewis also out-rushed NMHU, 170-132, but the Cowboys won the air game, notching 365 passing yards to the Skyhawks 241.
Kenneth Banks led the Skyhawks defense with 5.5 tackles (five solo) and a pass breakup.
Juan Hull recorded the Skyhawks lone sack of the game, which resulted in a loss of seven yards. As a team, the Skyhawks defense posted six tackles for a loss of 22 yards. The Skyhawks defense also stopped NMHU eight times on third down conversions.
Fort Lewis will return home this Saturday to face Western New Mexico at 1 p.m.
