Men’s Basketball Wins Fifth Straight Game

Box Score SILVER CITY, N.M. – For the second straight game, the Fort Lewis College men's basketball team held their opponent to under 70 points, as the Skyhawks defeated Western New Mexico University, 88-64.  The win improves the Skyhawks to 10-3 overall and 7-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
 
Will Morse hit a three-pointer 16 seconds into the game that gave FLC a 3-0 lead they would not relinquish.  The Skyhawks, who led by seven points at the half, took their largest lead of the game of 28 points when Ryan Brooks hit a jumper with 2:28 left in regulation.
 
"Defense was a key again for us tonight," said Fort Lewis College associate head coach Bob Pietrack.  "We have to play good defense for us to win, especially on the road.  "When we have balanced scoring, we're playing good FLC basketball.  Tonight we had a bunch of guys play well offensively and defensively."
 
Four Skyhawks netted at least 15 points against the Mustangs.  Nick Tomsick scored a team high 21 points after making 8-of-14 field goals (3-of-7 three-point field goals).  Morse, Alex Herrera and Wes McKenzie each chipped in 15 points. Morse dished out six assists and made 4-of-6 three-point field goals.  Herrera pulled down a game high seven rebounds and blocked a game high five shots.  McKenzie came off the bench to convert 4-of-5 three-point field goals.
 
Fort Lewis was solid again from the floor, sinking 47.8 percent (32-of-67), and 50 percent from long range (13-of-26).  After allowing the Mustangs to shoot 53.1 percent from the floor in the first half, the Skyhawks defense stepped up in the second half, allowing WNMU to only net 31 percent from the floor and 28.6 percent from long range.
 
WNMU was led by Brelan Berry with 27 points.  Terrez Scott added 13 assists.
 
Fort Lewis will play host to Regis University next Friday at 7:30 p.m., and No. 5 Metro State on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
