Box Score DURANGO, Colo. – Metropolitan State University of Denver, ranked fourth in the latest National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division II poll, snapped the Fort Lewis College men's basketball six-game winning streak Saturday night at Whalen Gymnasium in Durango, Colo. The Skyhawks fell to the Roadrunners, 78-65.
The loss moves Fort Lewis to 11-4 overall and 8-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Metro State improves to 14-1 on the year and 11-0 in league games.
After shooting a solid 42.9 percent from the floor and 40 percent from long range in the first half, the Skyhawks held a three-point lead at the break, 41-38. Cold shooting plagued the Skyhawks in the second half, as they hit on only 26.9 percent (7-of-26).
Five minutes into the second half, the Roadrunners went on a 6-0 run to take a 52-46 lead. MSU netted three shots while the Skyhawks went 0-3 in the run. The Roadrunners then went on a 12-5 run to take a 64-53 lead with 4:17 left in regulation.
Alex Herrera, who started the game with two blocked shots and five points in the first three minutes, finished with a team high 17 points. He added nine rebounds and five blocked shots.
Mike Matthews tied Herrera for team high honors with 17 points. Matthews made 4-of-9 field goals and 7-of-10 free throws.
Metro State's Brandon Jefferson led all scorers with 31 points and five assists. Jefferson sank 10-of-15 field goals, 4-of-5 three-point field goals and all seven free throw attempts. He also pulled down eight caroms. Nicholas Kay added 11 points and 12 rebounds for the Roadrunners.
For the game, FLC netted 35.2 percent from the floor (19-of-54), while Metro State hit 44.4 percent, including 81.1 percent from long range (9-of-11).
The Skyhawks will travel to Colorado Christian Friday night (8 p.m.) and Colorado Mines on Saturday (7 p.m.)
