Ashley Kuchar hit the game-winning shot with one second left in regulation to break an 83-83 tie and give the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team an 85-83 win over Chadron State College Friday night at Whalen Gymnasium. The win improves the Skyhawks to 7-3 overall and 4-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
Erika Richards tied the game for the 11
th time of the night after sinking both free throw shots with two minutes and three seconds left in regulation. Kuchar gave the Skyhawks a two-point lead one minute later and Richards made one-of-two free throws to extend the lead to three points.
With 23 ticks left in regulation, Dallas Shaw knotted the game with a three-pointer, but Kuchar drove the lane for a layup and a Skyhawks victory. Friday's game featured 12 score ties and 20 lead changes.
"We had been running a lot of high ball screens and we wanted to come with a false motion of it, so we brought Mary (Brinton) up to turn their guard," said Fort Lewis College head women's basketball coach
Jason Flores, describing the game-winning play. "Mary left early and we told Ashley to get to the rim and make a play. She did a great job and got to the rim and won the game."
Brinton led the Skyhawks and tied for game high honors with a career high 27 points. She sank 9-of-11 field goals and 9-of-11 free throws. Brinton's game high 13 rebounds also marked a career high and her second double-double of the season. Defensively, she added four blocked shots and two steals.
Kuchar dished out a career high nine assists and tallied 23 points as she made 9-of-17 field goals. She added three steals and three caroms on the night. Richards finished the game with 18 points, five assists and three rebounds.
Chadron State (1-10, 1-6 RMAC) was led by Kayli Rageth with 27 points, two assists and seven rebounds. Kattie Ranta and Dallas Shaw each added 19 points.
Fort Lewis netted 47.6 percent from floor and 75.9 percent from the charity stripe. The Skyhawks committed a season low eight turnovers, and outrebounded the Eagles, 39-30.
The Skyhawks will return to Whalen Gymnasium Saturday night to face Black Hills State University. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
