Box Score DURANGO, Colo. – Six Fort Lewis College men's basketball players netted at least 10 points Saturday afternoon, but the Skyhawks came up short in overtime, falling to Adams State University, 97-95.
Fort Lewis held a 14 point lead with 18:04 left in regulation. With a 10 point lead (69-59) and nine minutes left in the game, the Skyhawks were outscored 19-9 in the next six minutes as the Grizzlies knotted the game for the 11
th time of the night, 78-78.
With the score tied at 81-81 after 40 minutes of regulation, Adams State took a quick five point lead in the extra period, 86-81. The Skyhawks tied the game after
Kody Salcido made a layup, followed by
Wes McKenzie's three-point field goal. McKenzie then went 2-for-2 at the line to give the Skyhawks an 88-86 lead. After McKenzie's two free throws,
Mike Matthews made 1-of-2 free throws followed by McKenzie's second three-point field goal of the game that gave FLC a six point lead, 92-86.
Trailing by six, the Grizzlies chipped off five straight points with a layup and three-pointer by Lee Lark.
Nick Tomsick increased the lead to three points after making two free throws, 94-91. A foul by the Skyhawks led to two made free throws by ASU's Mike Hemsley and a three-pointer by Chuck Cole gave ASU a 96-95 lead. Justin Kauffman's made free throw with eight ticks left in the period gave the Grizzlies a 97-95 lead and the win.
McKenzie was perfect from the floor, making 3-of-3 field goals, 2-of-2 three-point field goals, and 2-of-2 free throws, as he finished the game with 10 points.
Nick Tomsick led the Skyhawks with 24 points. Twelve of his points came from the free throw line where he made 12-of-14.
Mike Matthews finished the game with 15 points, a game high six assists and nine rebounds.
Alex Herrera sank 7-of-14 field goals and 4-of-6 free throws for 18 points.
Cade Kloster came off the bench to add 13 points, and
Kody Salcido added 14 points and six rebounds.
Fort Lewis shot 47.5 percent from the floor (29-61) and 32-of-43 free throws (74.4 percent). The Skyhawks out-rebounded the Grizzlies, 47-34 and blocked six shots.
Okeuchukwu Arnold led all scorers with 30 points.
Fort Lewis will remain home Feb. 7-8 when they play host to Western New Mexico and New Mexico Highlands. Both games will tip-off at 7:30 p.m. each night at Whalen Gymnasium.
