Box Score DURANGO, Colo. – Sophomore forward
Mary Brinton led all scorers Saturday afternoon to help the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team to a 64-52 win over Adams State University at Whalen Gymnasium.
Brinton was near perfect from the floor, netting 7-of-8 field goals. She also added seven rebounds, four of which were on the offensive glass.
After seven lead changes in the first half, the Skyhawks went into halftime with a 30-29 lead. Brinton's layup with 1:32 left in the first half gave the Skyhawks a 28-27 lead they would not relinquish. ASU got to within three points of the Skyhawks in the second half, but FLC went on an 18-7 run to take their largest lead of the game of 14 points.
Erika Richards added 12 points after netting 3-of-4 field goals and all six free throw attempts.
Ashley Kuchar chipped in 11 points and
Christie Groh added 10.
The Skyhawks, which improve to 11-7 overall and 8-6 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, held the Grizzlies to a 31.9 field goal percentage (15-47), marking the fifth straight game the Skyhawks have held their opponents to under 40 percent shooting from the floor.
As a team, the Skyhawks made 23-of-45 field goals for 51.1 percent, and 16-of-19 free throws for 84.2 percent.
Adams State was led by Tessie Pikula with 14 points.
Fort Lewis will remain home Feb. 7-8 when they play host to Western New Mexico and New Mexico Highlands. Both games will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. each night at Whalen Gymnasium.
