Skyhawks Drop Two to Nationally Ranked Opponents

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CANYON, Texas – Playing against two nationally ranked opponents and their 13th and 14th games in a week, the Fort Lewis College softball team suffered two losses to No. 17 Angelo State (L, 11-2, five innings) and No. 8. West Texas A&M (L, 12-2, six innings).
 
"We played hard today," said Fort Lewis College head softball coach Kira Zeiter.  "The competition in these games will make us a better team, and we fought all day long.  By playing top teams it will help us rise up our game going into conference."
 
The Skyhawks got off to a tough start against Angelo State, giving up seven runs in the top of the first inning.  ASU tallied eight hits, including two home runs, to jump to a 7-0 lead.  They added another run in the top of the second inning and fourth innings for a 9-0 lead before the Skyhawks scored twice in the bottom of the fourth.
 
Destinee DeHerrera hit a double down the right field line and advanced to third base on a wild pitch.  Myndee Thompson drove in DeHerrera on a single.  Kamali'i Peneku then doubled to left center to advance Thompson to third base.  Thompson crossed home plate off of Hayley Bolyard's single to center field for a two-run inning. 
 
The Rambelle's added two more runs in the top of the fifth to secure the run-rule win, 11-2 in five innings.
 
Victoria Johnson was the pitcher of record for the Skyhawks, working one-third of an inning and surrendering three runs on four hits.  Katie Watkins worked 4.1 innings in the circle, allowing eight runs (seven earned) on 10 hits and fanning two batters.
 
Despite recording 11 hits, the Skyhawks were held to only two runs in the night cap game against West Texas A&M. 
 
After a three-run second inning by the Lady Buffs, Missy Fundora scored the Skyhawks first run of the game in the third inning after she got on a base from a triple to left center.  The next batter, Kaitlyn Bending, hit a bunt that drove in Fundora.
 
West Texas added another run in the bottom of the third for a 4-1 lead.  In the top of the fourth inning with two outs, Tehenia Telliano hit a double to right field. Jeovanna Rio entered the game to pinch run for Telliano. Nikki Klepfer then entered the game to pinch hit for Mandy Owens.  Klepfer singled up the middle to advance Rios to third base.  Rios scored the second run of the game for FLC when she crossed home plate on a fielding error by the Buffs.
 
West Texas came out to score four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning for an 8-2 lead.  They added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth and two more in the sixth for a run rule 12-2 win.
 
Kiley Raica worked four innings in the circle, allowing eight runs on nine hits. 
 
In the two games, Fundora went 2-for-6 at the plate with a run scored, while Thompson went 3-for-5 with a run and Peneku tallied three hits on four at-bats.
 
Fort Lewis will play their fifth game of the weekend tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. (MST) against Tarleton State University.
