Men’s Basketball Loses Second Half Lead; Fall to UCCS 76-74

Box Score COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – A late second half surge by the UC-Colorado Springs Mountain Lions led to a two point loss for the Fort Lewis College men's basketball team Saturday night at Gallogly Event Center.
 
The Skyhawks led by as many as 10 points with 12:47 left in regulation, but the Mountain Lions went on an 11-1 run, making 4-of-4 field goal attempts and 1-of-1 from the free throw line to tie the game with 10:50 left.
 
Fort Lewis trailed by five points with 4:58 remaining, but Nick Tomsick hit a jumper and three-pointer in back-to-back trips down the court to tie the game at 63.
 
Tomsick would then nail back-to-back three-pointers to give FLC a 69-68 lead with 2:50 left in the game.  On the Mountain Lion's next offensive set down the court, UCCS missed three straight field goal attempts followed by three offensive rebounds.  A foul by the Skyhawks led to two free throw attempts by UCCS – both missed attempts – but an offensive rebound by Dalton Patten gave UCCS a 70-69 lead they would not lose.
 
With 15 seconds left in the game, Cade Kloster scored three of his eight points after he hit one from downtown to tie the game at 74.  UCCS' Derrick White made the game-winning layup for the Mountain Lions with four ticks remaining, 76-74.
 
Tomsick led Fort Lewis with 27 points, two rebounds and two assists.  He made 11-of-19 field goals and 4-of-6 from three-point range.  Tomsick, who was the lone Skyhawk to score in double figures, was followed by Alex Herrera and Jared Smith with nine points each.
 
White led both teams with 33 points after netting 10-of-15 field goals and all 13 free throw attempts.
 
The Skyhawks netted 11-of-18 free throws (61.1 percent), which was 14 fewer attempts than the Mountain Lions who made 25-of-32.
 
Fort Lewis was out-rebounded 39-28, but dished out 10 assists and committed only six turnovers.
 
The Skyhawks will make their final road trip of the regular season next week when then play at No. 1 Metro State Friday night (7 p.m.) and at Regis (5 p.m.).
