Solid Hitting Leads to 6-4 Win over Tarleton State

Hayley Bolyard
Box Score CANYON, Texas – Nine hits and six runs batted in led the Fort Lewis College Skyhawks to a 6-4 win over Tarleton State University Sunday morning at the West Texas A&M Woodward Invitational.

"This was a good team win," said Fort Lewis College head coach Kira Zeiter.  "It feels good to leave Texas on a high note, and we played hard today.  The tough competition should have us ready for conference next week."

Missy Fundora put the Skyhawks on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the first inning.  Fundora reached base after drawing a walk.  After stealing second base, she advanced to third on Destinee DeHerrera's single to center field.  Myndee Thompson hit a sacrifice fly that scored Fundora for a 1-0 lead.

Tarleton State tied the game in the top of the second but Hayley Bolyard gave the Skyhawks a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning after she hit her first home run of season.

The Skyhawks escaped a rough third inning after TSU loaded the bases.  With one out and the bases load, the Skyhawks made an out at home plate for the second out of the inning, followed by a ground out by TSU.

Fort Lewis took a 3-1 lead after three innings after Thompson drove in Adriana Rosthenhausler.

Both teams were held scoreless in the fourth inning but TSU took a 4-3 lead with three runs scored in the top of the fifth.  Fort Lewis quickly responded and scored three of their own runs in the bottom of the fifth.

The first batter of the inning, DeHerrera started the scoring spree with a double to left center.  She advanced to third base on a wild pitch and crossed home plate on Thompson's single to the left side.  Thompson then stole second and scored off of Bolyard's double to left center.  Jeovanna Rios entered the game to pinch run for Bolyard.  Nikki Klepfer, who pinched hit for Mandy Owens, singled to left center to drive in Rios to give the Skyhawks a 6-4 lead and the win.

DeHerrera finished the game going 2-for-4 at the plate with one run scored.  Bolyard connected for a home run and a double on three at-bats for a run scored and two RBI.  Thompson added two hits on two at-bats, driving in three runs and scoring once.

Three pitchers saw action in the circle and each worked 2.1 innings.  Victoria Johnson started the game and was relieved by Kiley Raica after allowing one run on six hits.  Raica gave up three runs on two hits before Olivia Goldberg closed the game and earned the win after not surrendering one run.

Fort Lewis will open the conference season Feb. 22-23 at Regis University.  Saturday's doubleheader will begin at 12 p.m., followed by Sunday's doubleheader at 11 a.m.
